Celeste Ann Barrett went to be with the Lord November 5, 2019 at Journey Home with her loving partner Becky Grubbs by her side.
She was born Celeste Ann Mullen on November 28, 1952 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma where she was the very first baby born at the new Jane Phillips Hospital. She attended Bartlesville schools, graduated from Sooner High School, where she sang in the Sooner High Varsity Choir with Noel Kaiser, and Southern Methodist University, where she studied voice with Bruce Foote and sang with Dr. Lloyd Pfautsch. In 1974 Celeste relocated to Los Angeles to begin her singing career. While there, she sang at the Crystal Cathedral and with the Blossom Festival. She also sang and toured with the Roger Wagner and Norman Luboff choirs. After two years Celeste moved to Europe to continue her opera career in Zurich, Switzerland and for many years with Theatre Hagen of Hagen, Germany. While in Hagen, she sang multiple leading roles, including Evita Peron in Evita. She also directed children’s choruses, established the Celeste Barrett Quintet, a jazz ensemble, and nurtured many budding singers.
In 2003 Celeste returned to Bartlesville where she was an instructor of music at University of Tulsa, Oklahoma Wesleyan University, private voice teacher to many students and minister of music at Bartlesville First Church. She was a longtime member of the Bartlesville Choral Society board and also performed as soloist with the Bartlesville Symphony, the Bartlesville Choral Society, OK Mozart and the Light Opera of Oklahoma in Tulsa.
Celeste was preceded in death by her grandparents and parents, Jim and Jo Ann Mullen. She is survived by her partner, Becky Grubbs, cousin Jane Malcolm (Jerry) and son Max, cousins Sam Barrett (Paula), Dan Barrett (Anita), Andy Barrett (Linda), a host of friends, students, admirers and “fur babies” Malu, Dusty and Moon Pie.
Memorial services will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at the Bartlesville First Church-4715 S.E. Price Road in Bartlesville directed by the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.
