Melvin Eugene “Elbow” Barnes, Jr. was born December 16, 1954 at Amarillo, Texas to Melvin and Ruby (Moore) Barnes, Sr. He departed this life on Tuesday morning, February 20, 2024 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 69.
Elbow attended Canton Schools before enlisting in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. Upon enlistment, his parents had to sign for him because of his young age and it was discovered he was not heavy enough to meet the military’s minimum weight requirement. After eating a pile of bananas and drinking copious amounts of water he went back and made the weight requirement. He served in Viet Nam and was honorably discharged in 1975. Junior married Jacqueline Charlene “Jackie” Hail on November 9, 1976. They made their home in Longdale, Oklahoma and raised four children, Billy, Terry, Eva, and Macie. He worked for a number of years in the oil field and later worked for French’s Blue River Construction Co.
Junior was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Jackie Barnes; daughter Macie Barnes; sisters Cathy Brown and Sandra Williams; uncles Terry Moore and uncle Blair Moore and brother in-law George Hail; Survivors include son Billy Barnes and wife Robin, son Terry Barnes daughter Eva Bierig and favorite, son-in-law Will Atchley; brother Timmy Barnes and sister Debbie Barnes; uncle Rick Moore; thirteen grandchildren, Skyler Barnes, Brent Schroeder, Arcie Bierig, Ryleigh Bierig, Jacie May Murray, Tavie Bierig, Carly Barnes, Billy Barnes Jr., Koben Atchley, Rylee Smith, Lexi Reyes, Jolie Atchley and Isaac Barnes. He loved all his friends and family from Canton and Longdale, they know who they are.
Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, February 24, 2024 and 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, February 25, 2024 at Pierce Funeral Home, Canton, Oklahoma.
