OKLAHOMA CITY – Eric Shelton Ballew passed away on Jan. 26, 2021, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Eric was born Dec. 5, 1976, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, to Robert (Bob) and Cynthia (Cindy) Brooks Ballew. He grew up in Cookson, Oklahoma, with the Brooks family owning Cookson Village Resort. He then spent his adult life in the OKC area until recently moving to Tuttle, Oklahoma, with his wife, Shelly Conner Ballew.
Eric was an honor student throughout his school years at Keys Elementary and Tahlequah High, Class of ‘95. He was active in the Cookson UMC during these times. Eric was baptized in the Christian faith in Lake Tenkiller on April 24, 1992, by Dr. Rev. Robert Kanary. He went on to attend University of Oklahoma with engineering scholarships. Eric’s working career was a commercial auditor for Hartford Insurance Company. Eric was a natural-born leader and jack of all trades helping everyone. He learned his love of outdoors fishing and hunting by the influence ofhisUncleMonte Brooks, and his love of sports following his favorite teams – OU and St. Louis Cardinals – from his dad. He learned the love of farm life recently by helping his cousin Jeremy Brooks for many weekends near Enid, Oklahoma. Dr. Robert Kanary united Eric and Shelly June 12, 2010, in an outdoor wedding at the home of special friends. They were blessed by the birth of their twin daughters, Lyla Rose and Mikayla Ray, on Oct. 4, 2012.
Eric was preceded in death by their unborn child; infant baby brother; maternal grandparents, Jim and Norma Harvey Brooks; paternal grandparents, Marion Shelton and Lilah Cookson Ballew; uncles, Harvey and Bradford Brooks, his favorite (only) aunt, Marcheta Brooks; and a brother-in-law. Eric is survived by his wife, Shelly Renee; daughters, Lyla and Mikayla; his parents; mother- in-law, Vicky Glover of OKC; brother, James of St. Louis; four brothers in- laws; uncles, Terry, Monte, Steven, Rodney and Robert Brooks; and other family and numerous special cousins and many friends. Eric’s celebration of life will be livestreamed on the OK Cremation and Funeral Home, LLC Facebook Page Friday, Feb. 5, at 1 p.m. A second celebration will be held in Cookson on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m., led by Rev. Rachel Parrott. This will be in the Tenkiller Area Community Organization building, 32247 S. 540 Road, south of the Cookson Proctor Cemetery. Friends and family are welcome. Wearing masks will be appreciated.
