Richard Atkins, a cherished father, grandfather, and family member left this life in Sherman, Texas on Monday January 1, 2018 at the age of 71. He was born in Dyersburg, Tennessee to Aubert and Beulah (West) Atkins on October 9, 1946.
Richard was a dedicated, hard working member of his community. He was the Emergency Director for Comanche County, County Fire Chief, and County Safety Director. Richard also served in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was a huge sports fan, especially cheering for OU, enjoyed camping, fishing, and was an active member of the Masons. Richard had a great personality and loved to keep people laughing with his jokes, he cherished the times he spent with his family and friends.
Mr. Atkins is survived by his son, Doug Atkins and fiancé Valorie Stanley of Durant, Oklahoma and step-grandson, Aaron Abbott of Durant, Oklahoma; daughter, Melinda Atkins of Houston, Texas; granddaughter, Bryssa Atkins of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, and Grace; mother of his children, Joy Atkins of Lawton, Oklahoma; he is also survived by friends and others he considered family.
Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by his, twin sister; mother, Beulah Atkins; step-mother, Lillian Atkins; and father, Aubert Atkins.
Family hour will be from 1-2:00 PM on Saturday January 6th at the Holmes~Coffey~Murray Chapel in Durant, Oklahoma. The memorial service will begin at 2:00 PM in the Chapel with the family conducting the service.
