Jack Atchley

Jack Atchley
June 7, 1935 ~ May 27, 2021 (age 85)

Jack Atchley was born on June 7, 1935, in Hobart, OK to Jack and Violet (Messer) Atchley. He grew up and graduated High School in Mangum, Oklahoma. After High School, he served his Country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. Upon returning home from Germany, he met and married Kay Woodson on June 24, 1956.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics from Panhandle State University, his M.S. in Psychology and Psychometry from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and his Advanced Education in Administration from the University of Oklahoma.

His heart and love for teaching and students began in the Math and Physics classroom and he was soon promoted to High School Counselor. He served in Duncan for 22 years as Assistant Principal and then Principal of Duncan High School before becoming Superintendent of Schools in 1978. He received the Oklahoma District Administrator of the Year award, mainly for the many ways he continued to make time to ensure each student and teacher felt special and cared for.

He co-founded the Board of Directors for Stephens County Youth Services and was a founder and co-fundraiser for the Simmons Center. He served Presidential positions in Duncan chapters of the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Rotary Club and Southwestern School Administrators. He was also recognized as founder for Joint Venture for Youth with City for Youth, Duncan Public Schools Foundation, and the Higher Education Center of Duncan. He was proud to be instrumental in preserving the historic Foreman House for future generations.

Jack is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Kay Atchley; sons: Andy Atchley and wife Karri and Jody Atchley and wife, Tamra. He would tell you that the best of him lives on in his six grandchildren, Klint Atchley and wife Sandra, Kolt Atchley, Caleb Atchley and wife Kaitlyn, Kourtney Atchley Brown and husband Jacob, Payton Atchley and Taylor Atchley. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Judah and Micah Atchley, and several beloved nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jerry, and two sisters Veda and Oleta.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Monday, June 7, at 2:00 P.M. at Immanuel Baptist Church officiated by Andy Atchley and Jody Atchley. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Arrangements have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home/Oakcrest Cremation Center.
