A Drummond man was killed early Tuesday after the 1989 Suzuki motorcycle he was riding struck a bridge abutment and went out of control in the 1700 block of North Garland just south of Willow.
Michael Eugene Arnold, 29, was pronounced dead on the scene by Dr. Michael Pontious, medical examiner, after the accident occurred around 4:20 AM, according to an Enid Police Department report.
A witness to the accident apparently notified officials at a nearby fire station, who contacted police, according to Captain Jim Hood, police spokesman.
Officers found Arnold face down in the roadway already dead from what the medical examiner later determined was a broken neck, according to the report.
Arnold was apparently southbound on Garland when he went off the roadway and had trouble maintaining control because of grass wet from dew, the report states. He traveled 68 feet before striking the bridge abutment, knocking off a three – foot piece of reinforced concrete with the right corner of his motorcycle's crankcase and his right leg, resulting in a massive fracture, according to the report.
Grass and dirt thrown onto the roadway indicate Arnold attempted to regain control of the motorcycle and fishtailed for a moment before the vehicle went down into the roadway about 47 feet from the point of impact, where it left a skidmark, according to the report. The motorcycle and driver slid nearly another 44 feet before the bike stopped, throwing Arnold another 19 feet where he landed on the pavement.
Arnold's speed in the 45 mph zone was indicated at 65 mph before impact and 50 mph at the time of contact with the bridge, and he was not wearing a helmet, according to the report.
