Johnnie Mae (Whitmire) Jones Armstrong
September 20, 1923 ~ December 4, 2014

Johnnie Mae Jones Armstrong, 91, of Durant, passed away on December 4, 2014 at 12:10 AM. Arrangements are under the direction of Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held Tuesday December 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church with Bro Darel Bunch, officiating. Family night will be at the funeral home from 7:00 p.m-8:00 p.m. on Monday December 8, 2014. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery, with Don Herron, Glendel Rushing, Thomas Phipps, Jeremy Rowland, Mike Allen and Roger Luke serving as pallbearers.

Johnnie was born in Kenefic, Oklahoma on September 20, 1923, to John S and Ida Mae Speaks Whitmire. She married Charles Edward “Eddie” Jones on December 24, 1938 in Emit, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on January 26, 1996. After Edward’s death, she married Vernon Armstrong who survives her and resides in Durant.

She was well known for her cake decorating expertise for many years, first at Holsum Bakery and Bread Company. Later as a secondary business out of her home, she decorated cakes and did wedding and anniversary receptions.
She worked for 24 years at Herron’s Floor Covering in Durant. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Durant since 1947 until her illness prevented her attendance. While there she was Children’s Department Director, member of Adult I Department, as well as serving in many other capacities.

Johnnie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eddie, children Connie and Johnny Jones, and four brothers, Eugene, Leonard, Howard and Wallie. 

She is survived by her children, Joyce and Bill Jarvis, Donald Jones, Ron Schulz, Jerry and Jeri Jones, and Rickey Jones. Survivors also include grandchildren, Luanne Edelen Sbarbaro, Brett Edelen, Chad Edelen, Dana Jones Probert and Melissa Jones Bell and great-grandchildren, Sydney and Hannah Sbarbaro, Bode Edelen, Claire and Corinne Edelen, Bradley and Brian Probert, and Jones and Peyton Bell, as well as many cousins and other relatives.

The family wishes to thank all of Johnnie’s caregivers, especially Tina, Marquita, and Nita with Aspire Hospice who lovingly cared for her during the last four weeks, and the staff at Four Seasons for their care.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 715 W Louisiana, Durant, OK 74701 or the donor’s favorite charity.
