At his request, there will be no service for Oliver David "Dave" Altman. His body was donated to science. Arrangements are by Fairview Funeral Home Inc.
Dave was born Aug. 29, 1946, at Seminole to Oliver D. and Dorothy Mae Altman and died December 8, 2017 at the Fairview Regional Medical Center in Fairview, Oklahoma.
The family moved to Wewoka where he grew up and graduated from Wewoka High School in 1964. He attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated from East Central State College in 1969. He married Leslie Ann Spears on Feb. 22, 1969, and they divorced in 1974.
Dave joined the Army in 1969 and was honorably discharged in 1972. After his discharge, he returned to Wewoka and joined the staff of the Wewoka Daily Times as ad manager in 1973. In 1974, he joined the Wewoka Fire Department as a firefighter/emergency medical technician. On his days off, he helped start The Wewoka Sun, a weekly newspaper.
Dave married Randi Behee in 1975, and they divorced in 1978. In 1979, he moved to Clinton and helped start The Custer County Leader as a reporter. He became editor then general manager. In 1984, he moved to Blackwell to be the sports editor of the Blackwell Journal-Tribune. Later that year, he moved to Fairview to be a reporter for the Fairview Republican. He was promoted to editor in March 1985. He moved to Nowata in 1995 to be editor of the Nowata Star. Dave returned to the Fairview Republican in 1996. In 2001, he left the Republican to start an e-mail newsletter, Fairview E-News. In October, 2003, he joined the staff of Enid News and Eagle as copy editor. He retired from the Enid News and Eagle in 2008 but continued to publish E-News.
Survivors include his son, Gregory Michael Altman and wife Tina of Corpus Christi, Texas, and a daughter, Melissa Dawn Altman of Oklahoma City; a sister, JoAnn Bierman of Las Vegas; and one brother, Steve Altman of Wewoka.
He was preceded in death by four brothers.
Memorials may be made to Fairview Education Foundation with the funeral home serving as custodian.
