Danny Orvil Allen, 70, of Falconhead Resort, Burneyville, passed away on Friday, November 26, 2021 in a Denton, Texas hospital from small cell lung cancer. He and his wife Cathy Allen purchased a home at Falconhead in 2015 and recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Allen had been a Texas business manager, owner, entrepreneur and customer service manager during his professional life.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Amanda Allen Koepke and husband Lucas of Boulder, Colorado and Sarah Allen of Denton; a brother, Lee Wayne Allen of Colleyville, Texas; and a sister, Janet Wilson of North Richland Hills, Texas.
He was born on March 13, 1951 at Fort Worth, Texas to Loy-Wayne and Betty Wheeler Hines. Following his father's death in 1958, his mother married Joe Allen, and Danny and his siblings were adopted and happily took his stepfather's last name. He grew up in several Texas and New Mexico towns, graduating from high school in Midland, Texas in 1969.
Working for a music store while a teenager produced a lifelong love of music and lifelong friendships. He learned guitar and became a singer and performer. Along with five schoolmates, he formed the "Just Sump'n Else," a rock band to entertain at school assemblies and local events. He later performed for pay at various locations to continue supporting himself as a musician.
He graduated from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, with a bachelor of business administration degree in 1978.
After college, Mr. Allen entered the restaurant industry, first as a manager at Gardski's Loft in Lubbock, then as a partner in Great Jubilation in Amarillo, Texas and San Antonio and Joe Willy's in Dallas.
He then tried his hand at business enterprises of his own, including a print store, and he co-founded "Unicard," a private club innovation for alcohol serving in "dry" counties in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
He ended his career with 12 years as a customer relations manager for Fidelity Investments in the Westlake, Texas campus. He retired from business in 2018.
Mr. Allen married Catherine Mulkey Allen on May 15, 1981 in San Antonio. Their daughter Amanda was born in Dallas on July 22, 1986 and their daughter Sarah was born on June 30, 1993 in Dallas.
He introduced his family to the love of music, golf and sailing. They sailed regularly at Lake Weatherford and Lake Grapevine, and they vacationed every spring break at Lake Murray.
In retirement, his wife said, "He played music daily." He played from a personal collection of dozens of acoustic, steel, and dobro guitars, including a steel lap guitar that had belonged to his grandfather. He traveled regularly to jam sessions in North Texas.
He loved the peaceful surroundings of Falconhead Resort and watching the deer, other wildlife and birds from their picture windows, his wife said. Mr. Allen celebrated six years as a survivor of pancreatic cancer while living at Falconhead. He was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in the days preceding his death. His body was cremated.
