Otto “Dean” Alexander was born in Thomas, Oklahoma to Bill and Elizabeth Alexander on February 19, 1940. He passed away in Wellston on April 25, 2023 at the age of 83.
Dean graduated from Wellston High School with the class of 1958 where he lettered in baseball, basketball, and track all four years. He married his former wife, Carolyn, after high school, ran a dairy farm, raised Hereford cattle, and welcomed two children, David and Susan. Always a cowboy, Dean raised and trained several roping horses and often participated in local jackpot calf roping events. Dean graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1969, and moved his family to Ft. Worth, Texas in 1970 to begin his career as livestock marketing investigator with Packers and Stockyards Administration. He actively pursued his “cowboy life” throughout the 1970s while building a career with P&S.
Dean’s career took him to Denver, CO and to Washington DC, and then to Kansas with his second wife Debbie. Dean was an active stepfather and enjoyed coaching his stepdaughter, Tracy’s, softball team. Dean and Debbie welcomed a son, Ryan, in 1986. By this time Dean was living in Kansas and had taken up team roping. He enjoyed raising and training horses and competing in team roping events, culminating in his participation in a NFR for over-50 competition in OKC. In later years, Dean retired to his farm near his hometown, Wellston, OK, where he spent many mornings having coffee with old friends in the diners at Wellston and nearby Luther, OK. He raised cattle and worked with horses, and tended the farm, often with the assistance of his eldest son, David. Cowboy life was in his blood, and he lived it always.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Elizabeth. Survivors include his children, David Alexander, Edmond; Susan Kennedy, Keller, TX; Ryan Alexander, Osawatomie, KS; stepdaughter, Tracey Michael; grandchildren, Hannah Hardee, Margaret Hardee, Violet Alexander; siblings, Bill Alexander, Joan LaLiberte; former wife, Deborah Alexander; nieces & nephews, Jeff, Jamie, Kelly, and LeeAnn.
A Celebration of Dean’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2023 at Lehman Funeral Home of Wellston.
