Yon Sun "Yonny" Akers, 69, of Lawton, Oklahoma, entered heaven's gates on Monday, September 24, 2018, after a short battle with cancer. She was born to the late Park Hyo Kyung and Hwang Ok Bun on March 27, 1949, in Chung-Cheong Bukdo, South Korea, and was the oldest of nine children.
Yon Sun left her formal education behind during the intermediate school years in order to help her struggling family take care of her siblings. In 1975, she immigrated to the United States with her eldest daughter in tow first moving to Fort Hood, Texas, before settling in Lawton, Oklahoma in the early 1980's. Despite the lack of a high school education, she obtained her U.S. citizenship and was able to find success as a small business owner here due to her strong will and determination. She was well known in town as "Mama Yonny," the much beloved former owner and operator of Blondie's Lounge (previously located on Lee Boulevard). Everyone who met her quickly fell in love with her enthusiasm for life, feisty personality and tremendous heart. She considered her friends as family, gifting many with the title of "brother"/"sister" or "son"/"daughter".
Yon Sun proved it is never too late to find your soul mate when she fell madly in love with Alvin W. "Wayne" Akers, 73, of Lawton, Oklahoma, whom she married in 2010 and then retired with to enjoy their silver years. Though the first part of her life was dominated by struggle and sadness, she finally knew true happiness, love and serenity during these past eight years she shared with her adoring husband and adult children, Linda P. Allen, 45, of Lawton, Oklahoma, Sherry L. Chavez, 42, of Wichita, Kansas, and David P. Smith, 33, of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and grandchild, Taira M. Fountain, 11, of Lawton, Oklahoma, whom she leaves behind.
Yon Sun was recently reunited with her siblings and extended family in South Korea after losing contact for many years, and took one final trip in 2017 to her home country before she fell ill. She was preceded in death by six siblings and leaves behind in South Korea a sister, Park Ko Nam, 57, of Chung-Cheong Bukdo (who left her job behind to travel to the United States and help care for her during these last few months), a brother and many nieces and nephews.
Yon Sun requested for an intimate burial and funeral. The family wishes to thank all those who cared for her in her last days. A viewing for the public will be held Thursday, September 27, from 8am to 8pm, with visitation from 6pm to 7pm at Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Service, 6210 NW Cache Road, Lawton, Oklahoma. Any close friends, family or those whose hearts have been touched by Yon Sun and who have not yet received funeral information, please contact the family or attend the visitation to obtain service details.
When you are born, you cry, and the world rejoices. When you die, you
rejoice, and the world cries.
