Higgins, Texas – The funeral for Edward Eugene Akers, 87, will be 2:30 PM today at United Methodist Church. Jerry Don Cheshire are and Don Travis will officiate. Burial will be in Higgins Cemetery. Arrangements are by Mason Funeral Home.
He was born September 23, 1912, to Cleo and C. E. Akers and died Thursday, March 16, 2000.
He attended Loland, Higgins, Austin and Follett, Texas, schools and graduated from college in Goodwill Texas University. He taught three years at Loland and five years at Buffalo. On August 15, 1934, he married Leona Mack Bozarth. They spent winters in Buffalo where he taught eight grades in one room and summers farming. In 1940, he devoted himself to farming/ranching south of Follett.
In 1952, they moved to a ranch southeast of Higgins, semi – retiring in 1992. He served for numerous civic and church groups, including 15 years on the Shattuck school board, and was a member of United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Leona of the home; two daughters, Sharon Merydith of Booker, Texas, and Pam Tyson of Higgins; two sons, Larry of Oklahoma City and Monte of Austin, Texas; 10 grandchildren; two step – grandchildren; and 13 great – grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, three brothers and one grandson.
Memorials may be made to Higgins EMT Association or to the church.
