January 25, 1903, near Lela: Eugene B. Browning, aged 19 years one month and 27 days.

The funeral was held from the family home and was attended by the people generally. He was baptized in childhood in the M. E. Church South, but united with the entire family with the M. E. Church at Lela under the pastorate of Rev. G. A. Cummins, now of Ingalls, O. T. Eugene was a leader in church work among the young people in the League - the Sabbath School - the public service - he was always in his place.

His was a life that tells. After making a profession of Christ, he looked on that profession as a very serious thing – as a covenant with God and his people; a covenant with truth and with duty as well. Although possessed of a temperament keenly alive to the bright and joyous in life, he seemed always able to keep his naturally bright and buoyant spirit within proper limits and to say "No" to all propositions of evil – and this positive decision of character was attended by a frankness – a sincerity and courtesy of manner that warded off all offense. Then, he was mother's boy; mother's wish was to him and and of all controversy. This most ennobling quality of young manhood was preeminently his; and he never was ashamed to say in any place or time: "Mother thinks so." But Eugene has left us; we cannot express our loss; neither can we conceive the glory that is his. But we believe that someday "When life's lessons have all been learned," and we have been made able to read aright God's purposes, and his "mysterious providences," we shall find that mystery" is love and "providences," His gracious presence.
