The funeral for Gene C. Wood, 81, of Perry, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First
Presbyterian Church, Perry. The Rev. Paul Stewart will officiate. Burial will be
in Grace Hill Cemetery, Perry. Arrangements are by Brown-Dugger Funeral Home,
Perry. Family visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He was born Aug. 9, 1924, in Noble County, to William Stanley and Ruby Lavern
Hodge Wood and died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, at Perry Memorial Hospital.
He lived in Noble County all his life and graduated from Perry High School in
1943. He served in the Army Air Force from May 1943 to March 1946, obtaining the
rank of corporal before his discharge.
He married Dorothy J. Hull March 21, 1944, in Perry. He worked in city and
county law enforcement for 22 years, serving as Noble County undersheriff for
four years and Perry Chief of Police for 12 years. He later served as director
of personnel services at Charles Machine Works for 12 years and served as
manager of the Perry Chamber of Commerce for eight years before retiring in
1988. He also worked part-time at Brown-Dugger Funeral Home and Casteel Real
Estate and Auction.
He was involved in numerous youth activities, including baseball and Boy Scouts
of America and served as president of the Perry Peewee Baseball Association. He
was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon and elder.
He was a member of Perry Noon Lions Club, Ellis-Jirous American Legion Post No.
53, Perry Elks Lodge and Perry Chamber of Commerce. He was president of Perry
Lions Club, Lions Club zone chairman and Lions deputy district governor in the
Perry district. He received the Lions Club Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and was
recognized for having recruited more than 140 members. He was honored as Perry’s
Citizen of the Year and was a 2004 inductee into Perry Chamber of Commerce Hall
of Fame.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy, of Perry; one daughter, Carolyn J. Briegge of
Perry; one son, Larry G. Wood of Rowlett, Texas; one brother, Joe L. Wood of
Tulsa; one sister, Nita J. Kempka of Perry; six grandchildren; and 12
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
