There will be no service for C.J. Taber, 83, of Perry, but the family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, east of Perry. Arrangements are by Brown-Dugger Funeral Home, Perry.

He was born April 24, 1923, in Barnsdall to Sanford and Geraldine Himes Taber and died Wednesday, July 26, 2006.

He attended Blackwell High School and enlisted in the Navy before he completed his senior year. He served in World War II in the “Splinter Fleet” aboard the wooden subchaser 995. He was harbored at a base in the Marshall Islands where he rode aboard the PT109 with Capt. John F. Kennedy. Also while in the Navy he received permission from Warner Brothers to paint a picture of Bugs Bunny eating a carrot while sitting on a sinking Japanese submarine on the lookout tower of his boat.

He was awarded his G.E.D. Oct. 16, 2001, for honorable service in the Navy.
He worked for Marty McQuain, then for Taber’s Welding. He owned and operated Taber’s Manufacturing from 1955 until he retired in 1985.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda Lou North Taber of Perry; three sons, David Taber of Oroville, Wash., James Taber of Perry and Larry Taber of Oklahoma City; one stepson, Brian Kaiser of Perry; one daughter, Kathleen Taber Scott of Pawhuska; one stepdaughter, Lisa Worley of Hennessey; two brothers, Fordean “Corky” Taber of Richland, Wash., and Clarence “Squirt” Taber of Oroville; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ramona Griffin Taber, and one son.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home, 1010 N. 7th Street, Perry, OK, 73077 to Disabled American Veterans or Zion Lutheran Church.
