Harold E. Peed, age 85, died peacefully on December 27, 2005. Hal was born in Fort Collins, CO on February 29, 1920 to Raymond and Edith Peed. He graduated from Craig High School in 1938, then attended business school in Denver. He enlisted in September 1940, serving the U.S. Army Air Corps, 466th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. While training at Camp Barkley in Abilene, TX, he met and married the love of his life, Melrose (Mellie) Chaney in March 1942. They traveled all over the U.S. while Hal served in WWII. Hal was a Staff Sergeant and armorer/gunner on a B-24 Liberator airplane called the Ruptured Duck. Their crew flew from Attlebridge AFB in England and completed 30 combat missions over occupied Europe. He was honorably discharged in September 1945 and came back to Colorado where he ran a family restaurant in Craig and later worked as an aircraft inspector in Colorado Springs. In 1964, the Peeds moved to Perry, OK to operate the Cherokee Strip Restaurant, which was known for its great lunch buffet and Omaha steaks. They retired in 1974 in Perry. Hal was preceded in death by his two brothers and parents and is survived by his wife, Mellie; daughter Michelle and son in law, Adam Hasenfratz of Edmond, OK; son Michael Peed of Bozeman, MT; grandchildren, Erin and Holly Hasenfratz and Madian Peed; and his beloved dog, Brandy. Hal was an accomplished painter and avid reader who loved Western novels. His sharp wit and sunny disposition served him well. Dad, we love you and will miss you greatly. A family memorial service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. Melrose Elizabeth Chaney Peed, 82, died peacefully on September 16, 2006 in Oklahoma City. Mell was born in Abilene, Texas on June 11, 1924 to William and Beulah (Martin) Chaney. She graduated from Travis High School in 1941. Mell met the love of her life, Harold (Hal) Peed, who was stationed at Camp Barkley in Abilene and they married in March 1942. During World War II as Hal served at many bases, Mell worked in Montgomery Ward credit offices. After the war, they moved to Craig, CO where they ran a family restaurant, then later moved to Colorado Springs where Mell worked as bookkeeper/office manager for several businesses. The Peed's moved to Perry, Oklahoma in 1964 and operated the Cherokee Strip Restaurant until they retired in 1974. Mell & Hal were faithful members of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Perry, where Mell served many years as church secretary, treasurer, and lay reader. She also served several terms on the state board of the Episcopal Churchwomen. Mell was preceded in death by her parents and Hal, her husband of 63 years. She is survived by her son Michael Peed of Bozeman, Montana; daughter Michelle & son-in-law Adam Hasenfratz of Edmond, OK; two sisters, Dorothy & brother-in-law Alvin Cockrum of Perry, OK and Doris Downs of Amarillo, TX; and grandchildren Erin & Holly Hasenfratz and Madian Peed. Mell was an avid reader and whiz at crossword puzzles. She enjoyed traveling and one of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren. Mom, we love you and will miss you dearly. A family memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Augustine Episcopal Church in OKC with interment at Grace Hill Cemetery in Perry at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Guild of St. George Food Pantry Ministry at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in OKC or the charity of your choice.
