George Vance Garton Jr., longtime Ponca City resident, died
Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at his home. He was 53.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at First Assembly of God
with the Rev. Micha Wells, pastor of First Assembly of God, officiating,
assisted by the Rev. Mark Shorey, pastor of Tri Lake Assembly of God in Branson.
Burial will follow at Ceres Cemetery under the direction of Trout Funeral Home.
Vance was born July 5, 1950, in Ponca City to George Vance Garton Sr. and Wanda
Gill Garton. He grew up in Ponca City and graduated from Ponca City High School
in 1969.
He entered the United States Army shortly after graduation. He married Linda
Jeanette Harbin on Sept. 30, 1975 in Ponca City.
Vance was a self-employed carpenter, a published poet and member of the Classic
Car Club in Ponca City. He had strong family values and was a member of First
Assembly of God.
He is survived by his wife Linda of the home; five sons, Lance McCune and his
wife Angie of El Dorado, Kan., Spencer McCune and his wife Tara of El Dorado,
Kan., Roy Garton and his wife Debbie of Waco, Texas, Adam Garton of Ponca City,
and Gregg Garton of Ponca city; two daughters, Cristy Garton of Ponca City, and
Sumer Garton of Ponca City; four grandchildren, Austin McCune, Tyler McCune,
Trevor McCune and Reagan McCune; his parents, George and Wanda Garton of Ponca
City; one sister, Velma Nephew of Crystal River, Fla.; one brother, Wayne Garton
and his wife Carolyn of Franklin, Tenn.
Casket bearers will be Danny Osborn, Tom Hoddy, Ron Clark, Barry Knight, Mark
Russell, and Kyle Benton. Honorary casket bearers will be Jeff Denton, Bob
Christensen, Brian Wiseman, John Kepka and Jimmy Greenhagen.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Assembly of God, 1308 E. Bradley,
Ponca City, Okla. 74601.
