John L. Ogden was born July 12, 1944, in Boynton, Oklahoma and peacefully passed away at home in Oktaha, Oklahoma on July 24, 2024. John was the second child and oldest son of B.L. and Ruth (Pippin) Ogden. He was a proud graduate of Wainwright School and Connors State College.
He married the love of his life Joann (Parker) Ogden on December 7, 1962. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage and were madly in love through the very end of his life. Together they welcomed two children, Doug and Marla. John was a devoted husband and father. He was ornery, humorous, and never missed the opportunity to give someone a hard time or dub them with a nickname. A man who stuck to his family heritage, he was proud to ranch and raise a red Angus herd with his son, Doug. Through the years he enjoyed raising Haflinger horses and sharing the art of wagon-driving with his grandchildren.
John's favorite role was arguably that of grandfather and great grandfather. Nothing lit up his face with immeasurable joy like the children in his life. He took his job of spoiling the kids quite seriously, happily irritating their parents by buying saddles, toys, and horses. About the only thing he didn't get to buy was a helicopter- and that's only because Grandma Joann said no. His grandchildren and great grandchildren thought John hung the moon and are immensely sad at the loss of such a wonderful grandpa.
John was a sharp businessman and a strong advocate for his community. He owned and operated Muskogee Overhead Door Company until 1992. He became branch manager of Rocket Freight Lines after having worked there as a driver for three years. He was a store manager for McAdams Pipe and Supply in Muskogee and worked as a construction engineer for ODOT. Perhaps the business he was most proud of was Ogden Insurance Agency in Muskogee, which he was owner and agent for from January 1976 to 2024. John served in a multitude of leadership roles to represent his community, such as: American Farmers and Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union vice president and director on the Executive Board from 1978-88 and 2001-2011, executive director of the Muskogee County Community Action Foundation, member of the Governor's Task Force for Small Business, a board member of Women in Safe Homes (W.I.S.H), past president of Teamsters Union Local 516, and a deacon of the Assembly of God church. John was a man with vision who was willing to take action to make a positive difference.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, his in-laws Russell and Hazel Parker; his sister Sandra Kaye Smalley; daughter-in-law Stephanie (Breashears) Ogden; brother-in-law Rev. Leo Guthrie; sister-in-law Carolyn (Bowden) Ogden; nephew Bart Guthrie; niece Amy Ogden;

JoAnn (Parker) Ogden, 80, of Oktaha, passed away peacefully at home on August 30, 2024. JoAnn was the favorite (only) child of Russell and Hazel (Wilson) Parker and was born in Charleston, Arkansas. Although Hazel wanted her daughter to begin life in Arkansas, Joann was a true Okie and lived in Oktaha, Oklahoma for most of her life.
She met John Ogden in the 6th grade at Wainwright Elementary School. They were friends throughout childhood and married on December 7, 1962. JoAnn was a dedicated wife, supporting John through many business and leadership endeavors throughout their 61 years of marriage.
JoAnn and John welcomed two children, Doug and Marla. She loved nothing more than to spend time with her family, particularly her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. After her daughter-in-law suffered a tragic car accident, she took up the role of mother figure for her grandchildren. She cultivated a particularly close relationship with her grandson, Jace. She guided her grandchildren through many years of school and marriage. JoAnn was outspoken and often gave advice to an audience of eye rolls and pursed lips. However, her support never wavered, her love always endured, and her intentions were understood. She was the glue that held the family together. Her passing has broken our hearts and she will be sorely missed.
JoAnn was a keen businesswoman, working at Commercial Bank until she and John acquired Ogden Insurance in 1976. The story goes that she didn't much care for insurance in those early days, but it didn't stop her from taking it on full force and becoming a highly respected woman in the business. She managed Ogden Insurance for 47 years, retiring in late 2023 to spend more time with John. Her retirement was cut short by a severe fall at home which led to a 6 month and 1 week hospital stay. JoAnn had grit, fighting to return home to John and her brand-new great-granddaughter, Amelia Joann.
In her free time, JoAnn loved to read novels and watch Hallmark movies. Some of her favorite authors were Nora Roberts, Fern Michaels, Danielle Steele, Debbie Macomber, or John Grisham. Check out a book or watch a sappy Hallmark Christmas movie in her honor.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her in-laws, Buet and Ruth Ogden; her sister-in-law, Sandra Kaye Smalley; daughter-in-law, Stephanie (Breashears) Ogden; brother-in-law, Rev. Leo Guthrie; sister-in-law, Carolyn (Bowden) Ogden; nephew, Bart Guthrie; and niece, Amy Ogden.
JoAnn is survived by son, Doug and Brenda Ogden of Oktaha; daughter, Marla and Rocky Mosley of Oktaha; grandsons, Jace and Grace Ogden of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Rocky Joe Mosley of Indiana, Daniel and Jennifer Mosley of Broken Arrow; granddaughters, Rachel and Trea Milne of Oktaha, and Caroline Lacie and Mike Hering of Port Lavaca, Texas; great-grandchildren, Jack and Amelia Ogden, Cinch Morris, Aiden, Logan, Adriel, McKynlee, and Brody Mosley, Addilyn and Jaxon Milne; aunt, Helen and Harley Jones; uncle, Donald and Loretta Wilson of Charleston, Arkansas; aunt, Shirley and Charles Scott of Kansas; and lifelong friend, Bonnie Boyer.
JoAnn's life will be celebrated at 10AM, Saturday, September 7, 2024 at Muskogee First Assembly of God with Dr. Steve Rose officiating. Interment will follow at Middleton Chapel Cemetery in Oktaha. Pallbearers will be Jace, Robert and Keith Ogden, Trea Milne, Brett Guthrie, and Weston Hill. Honorary pallbearers will be Doug Ogden, Rocky Mosley, Ken Ogden, Mike Hering, Grady Reeves, Jim, Ross, Gerald, Steve and Mike Ogden.
