Joseph Edward Pitman, 86, died Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at his residence in Muskogee. He was born September 21, 1923 in Rudy, Arkansas to James Edward Pitman and Vesta (Lingo) Pitman.
Joseph and Opal Marie Kelly married in March of 1943 in Van Buren Arkansas. In May of 1943, during World War II, Joseph entered the military and served with the Army Engineers 346 Co. A, Normandy Campaign. He received a Purple Heart, five Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Metal. He also served with the U. S. Navy Sea Bees in the Korean War from 1949 to 1951.
He worked in Van Buren, Arkansas at Dickman, Pickens and Bond Construction Co. until January of 1956 when the company transferred him to Muskogee. Joseph retired from Connor’s State College in 1994. He was a charter member of the WW II "D" Day Museum and a life member of the American Legion.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 66 years and 10 months, Opal Marie Pitman of the home; daughter, Jo Marie Stotts; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald L. and Janis Pitman; grandson, Ron Pitman, Jr. and his wife, Andrea; granddaughters, Kara McFeeley, Carolyn Booth, Donna Eidson and her husband, Ron Eidson, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday at Fosters’ Ivory Chapel with Pastor Jeff Flanagan. Entombment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum. Honorary pallbearers will be Ron Pitman, Jr., Ron Eidson, Rob Eidson, Lewis Watkins, Frank Kelly, John Kelly, Conard LaRue and Edwin Watson.
Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home.
