Richard Paul Zimmerman

Richard Paul Zimmerman
July 9, 1930 ~ May 2, 2024

Richard Zimmerman, of Durant, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at the age of 93. He was born on July 9, 1930, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Milo and Ferol Vivian (Mitchell) Zimmerman.

He answered the call of duty and served his country with honor as a Corporal in the US Army during World War II from 1944 to 1948. His experiences during the war instilled in him a deep sense of patriotism. His love for all things related to World War II was evident in his extensive knowledge, which he enjoyed sharing with anyone who would listen. Following his military service, Richard embarked on a career as a machinist in the automotive manufacturing industry.

Richard was an avid sports fan, enthusiastically supporting the Seattle Sea Hawks, Seattle Mariners, and the New York Yankees. He found pleasure in watching old war movies, discussing current events, and visiting Wright's Drive-In with his wife on a weekly basis. His trips to the casino were also a source of excitement and enjoyment.

On November 7, 2009, Richard married Sherry Floyd in Burien, Washington. They experienced an instant connection through their shared grief and loss.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Sherry (Floyd) Zimmerman of Durant; his son, Larry Zimmerman; his daughter; his stepdaughters, Christina Powell and her husband David of Mead, and Katie Floyd of Orting, Washington; and his grandchildren, Alexi and Kelson Powell of Mead.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Milo and Ferol Zimmerman; his son, Frank Zimmerman; his daughter, Janet Zimmerman; and his siblings, Lt. Col. John Martin Zimmerman, Charles Wayne Zimmerman, Earl Ellis Zimmerman, Robert Mitchell Zimmerman, Velma Jane Zimmerman Holley, Betty Jean Zimmerman Burch, and Doris Loretta Zimmerman Peacock.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at Fort Gibson National Cemetery on Monday, May 6, 2024 at 2:30 p.m.

Services are under the direction of Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home, 121 North 5th Street, Durant, Oklahoma 74701.
