Joyce M. Montgomery, 93, of Muskogee, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2012. She was born April 28, 1919 in Western Grove, Arkansas to Troy and Vallie (Moten) Magness.
Joyce was raised in Arkansas and graduated from high school. She then received her Bachelor’s degree in education from Arkansas State and her Master’s degree from the University of Arkansas. Joyce began teaching DeValls Bluff High School in Arkansas for 10 years.
In 1952, she moved to Bartlesville, OK to teach before finishing her career at Fort Gibson Public Schools. While in Bartlesville, she met and married Jack C. Montgomery in 1961. Joyce was very proud of Jack’s service in the United States Military as he was awarded the highest honor our country can bestow on a serviceman, the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Joyce was very honored upon his death that the Muskogee V.A. Medical Center was renamed the “Jack C. Montgomery Veterans Administration Medical Center.”
Joyce was a member of the Zeta Phi sorority and an active volunteer for many organizations especially the Gospel Rescue Mission.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; parents; sister, Jo Anna Swilling; and brother, Frank Swilling.
She is survived by a special niece, Linda Shears of San Diego, CA and numerous friends, caregivers and other relatives. A funeral service remembering the life of Joyce Montgomery will be 10:00 AM, Friday, July 20, 2012 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Bill Crow officiating. Funeral services are entrusted to Bradley Funeral Service of Muskogee. Friends may share condolences with the family atwww.bradleyfuneralservice.com.
