Billie Wayne James

Dec. 22, 1934 ~ Feb. 2, 2009

Billie Wayne James, 74, of Tahlequah, Okla., passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at his home with his family at his side. He was born Dec. 22, 1934, in Shady Point, Okla., to Jacob Jackson and Edna Ila (Calhoon) James. He had lived in the Tahlequah area for 34 years, moving from Hugo, Okla.

He was of the Christian faith, attending Nazarene Church in Tahlequah. He was a member of the American Legion and served in the Korean War as a staff sergeant with the motor pool in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed fishing, being with his family and always found humor and the best in every situation. He was retired from the Claremore Indian Hospital as a security officer. He lived his life unselfishly, always seeing to the needs of others. He was very proud of his Choctaw heritage. He loved his family and country. He will be missed by all who shared in his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude, of the home; his children, Cheryl and Leo Washington of Calera, Okla., Lisa Wolbert of Sallisaw, Okla., David James of Okmulgee, Okla., Derrell James of Unger, Okla., Ruth Ellen Garcia of Calera, Okla., and Christina and Darrell Carey of Tahlequah. He also leaves to mourn his passing is his sisters, Patsy James of Okmulgee, Okla., Carol Ann and Clarence Smith of Fort Smith, Ark., Brenda and Willie Campbell of Fort Smith, Ark. He leaves a legacy of 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and other family members.

A graveside service for Mr. James will be held Thursday, Feb., 5, 2009, at 1 p.m. in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, Okla. Arrangements are under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
