Elroy Albert Drake, 76, U.S. Army veteran and longtime Dewey resident, passed away Friday, September 25, at his home. We thank and honor his life of service to his country, community, and all the buddies and neighbors he met on his life’s journey.
Elroy was born to Kenneth and Dorothy (Fishell) Drake on March 4, 1944, in Bartlesville, OK. He grew up in Copan, OK, with his two brothers and three sisters. After graduating from Copan High School in 1962, Elroy enlisted in the United States Army serving during the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. He would later become a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, serving a total of 32 years.
Elroy later settled in Dewey and ran his own trash route and sanitation company Elroy Drake Sanitation. There were many people along his route that he met and became good friends with. He was known as the man with a heart of gold who would go out of his way to help everyone that he could. Elroy enjoyed telling bad yet clean jokes and entertaining the nurses at the hospital. The nurses at the hospital knew him well and would consider him ‘ornery.’
Elroy is survived by his sister Dianna Piersanti and Joseph of Las Vegas, NV, nephews Frank and Anthony Piersanti, niece Christina Fredrick, as well as many other nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Drake, his parents, two sisters Barbara Wood and Marcella Drake, and two brothers Leroy and James Drake.
