Mildred Aleen Thompson

Mildred Aleen (Story) Thompson passed away March 22, 2002. She was born June 12, 1923 in Sentinel, Oklahoma to Lewis and Bertha (Lowe) Story. Mildred attended school in Sentinel. She earned many scholastic awards during those years and was named valedictorian in her senior year in 1941.
She met Walter P. (Buck) Thompson, a lieutenant in the army in 1942. They were married in 1943 in San Diego, California. Mildred and Buck lived briefly in Salem, Oregon; Denver, Colorado Senintel, Oklahoma; Leaky, Texas; before settling in Ardmore, Oklahoma. While caring for her family in Ardmore, Mildred was very active with the PTA, Eastern Star, various civic organizations and book clubs. While Buck pursued a career in Civil Service, Mildred began work on a Bachelor's degree at Southeastern State University in nearby Durant, Oklahoma. She completed her degree in Elementary Education in 1969 and began teaching at nearby Plainview Elementary School outside Ardmore in 1974 and later at Lincoln Elementary in Ardmore in 1979. She retired in 1987 and is remembered as an outstanding teacher who had excellent rapport with her students. Mildred moved to Cordell in 1991 after the loss of her husband, Buck. She made many friends while living in Cordell and is fondly remembered by those who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Bertha and Lewis Story of Sentinel; her husband, Walter P. (Buck) Thompson of Ardmore; her brother-in-law C. A. Smith of Sentinel and her grand nephew, Andrew Smith of Pauls Valley. She is survived by her daughter, Vicki J. Thompson of Oklahoma City; her sister, Lois (Story) Flaming and brother-in-law, Archie Flaming of Cordell; her nephew Don Smith and wife, Kathy of Pauls Valley; her grand niece Sherri Atkins and husband, Wayne of Lewisville, Texas; her grand niece Michele Shoemaker and husband, Wayne of Chicago, lllinois; her great grand nieces Meagan and Ashley Atkins of Lewisville, Texas; her cousins, Marge Scott of Cordell; Ed Story of Arapaho; Gaytha Jetton of Oklahoma City; Verlin McWhirter and wife Jean of Oklahoma City; Gerald McWhirter and wife, Sally of Oklahoma City; Mel Story Jackson and husband, Walter and Marjorie Carnahan and husband, Delbert of Sayre; her aunt Lavelle Lowe of San Jose, California and a host of other loving friends and relatives.
Funeral services for Mildred Thompson were held Tuesday, March 26 at 10 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Cordell with H. L. Shirey officiating. Burial, under the direction of McClure Funeral Home of Cordell, will follow in Sentinel Cemetery.
