Mrs. Rachel Arnold

Mrs. Rachel Arnold died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jones, Jan. 7. She was twice married, and leaves 4 children to mourn her loss. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. W. H. Williams, were held in the Christian church Sunday.

Wilma Elizabeth "Billie" Conley

Wilma Elizabeth "Billie" Conley, 1405 Meadowbrook, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. She was 80.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. John Michalicka, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery under the direction of the Trout Funeral Home.

Born March 26, 1919, at Bradford, Pa., she was the daughter of Charles Merton and Jesse Estele McKune Lockwood. She attended schools at Bradford and graduated from Robert’s Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y.

On Jan. 28, 1944, she married Francis R. “Fran” Conley at Bradford. The couple were first employed in Bradford before moving to Wichita Falls.

They subsequently moved to Ponca City in 1951 when Mr. Conley accepted employment with Conoco. Billie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a member and officer of the Sweet Adelines, a member of the Ponca City Music Club, and played bridge with several groups. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling both here and abroad and sailing with her husband.

She is survived by her husband, Fran, of the home; three sons, Marc Conley and his wife Laura of Tulsa, Mike Conley and his wife Rosie of Houston, and Tom Conley and his wife Mary of Emporia, Kan.; a daughter, Patricia Jack and her husband Danny of Ellensburg, Wash.; and seven grandchildren, Nadia Conley, Sarah Conley, Sean Conley, Erin Conley, Corbin Conley, Paige Conley, and Ryan Jack.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Larry; a grandson, Kevin Conley; three brothers, James, Alan and Harry; and four sisters, Lois Loraine, Virginia, Rhea and Margie.

Casket bearers will be Marc Conley, Mike Conley, Tom Conley, Bruce Bray, George O’Brien, and Jim Scott. Honorary casket bearers will be Ryan Jack, Sean Conley, Corbin Conley, and Joe Kotarski.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Ponca City, 1904 N.




Nancy Geneva (Jenkins) Davis

Nancy Geneva (Jenkins) Davis, 90, of Arkansas City, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001 at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery. Pastor James Newman officiated.

Nancy was born Sept. 8, 1910 in Kay County, OK to Thomas E. and Myrtle C. "Lottie" (Gregory) Jenkins. She was reared and educated in the Kay County and Bixby, OK areas. Nancy married Samuel F. Davis, Jr. on Sept. 2, 1930, in Newkirk. The couple made their home in the Newkirk area for a short time before moving to Arkansas City in 1931. Nancy was a homemaker and member of the First Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include two sons, Gary of Arkansas City, Tom of Jennings, LA; two daughters, Delores Guilinger of Olathe, KS and Jollene Hunt of Arkansas City; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Sam in 1993, two grandsons, one brother and one sister.

A memorial has been established with the First Assembly of God Church of Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements were made by the Rindt-ErdmanFuneral Home of Arkansas City.




Mrs. Mable Dewey

Mrs. Mable Dewey Dies in Hospital

Newkirk - Funeral services for Mrs. Mable Dewey, 74, pioneer county resident, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Methodist Church.

Mrs. Dewey, the widow of Mason P. Dewey, died at 3:20 p.m. Friday at the Ponca City Hospital, where she had been a patient the past five months.

The Rev. George Needham, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Newkirk Cemetery under direction of Stahl Funeral Service.

The boyd will lie in state between 10 a.m. Sunday and 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel. The casket will not be opened at the service.

Mrs. Dewey was born Oct. 12, 1880, at Ellis, Kan. She and Dewey were married at Ellis APril 11, 1899. He made the Cherokee Strip Run into the area and staked a claim 2 miles southeast of Kildare. They observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1949. They lived on the homestead until 1952, when they moved into Newkirk. He died Jan. 1, 1953. She was a member of the Methodist Church, Woman's Society of Christian Service, the Helping Hand Sunday School Class and the DUV.

Survivors are three sons, Byron M. Dewey, Bayonne, M. J.; Mason P. Dewey Jr., Mesa, Ariz, and Herman L. Dewey, Tulsa; three daughters, Mrs. Marion R. Cracraft, Tulsa, Mrs. Jack Durall, New York City, and Mrs. Georgia Owens, Ponca City; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, one brother, Clyde Mason, Salina, Kan., and two sisters, Mrs. Harvey Lopshire, Wichita, and Mrs. Laura Prather, Salina, Kan.

The family is at the Dewey Home.




Alfred F. Hall

Alfred F. Hall, lifelong area resident, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 26, 1999, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was 75.

The graveside service will be held Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Burbank Cemetery, Burbank, with the Rev. Kenneth Lewis, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fairfax, officiating. A Rosary will be said this evening at 8 p.m. at the home, 1408 S. 14 Mile Road, by Father Lewis. Viewing will be at his home. Burial will be under the direction of Trout Funeral Home.

Alfred was born March 15, 1924, in Ponca City, the son of Alfred F. and Fannie (Lessert) Hall. He attended Burbank schools and the Oklahoma Military Academy where he was on the polo team. He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 24, 1942, and served with the 542nd Paratroopers in the 188th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant on Feb. 16, 1946.

On June 24, 1943, he married Frieda Frank in Pawhuska. They made their home east of Ponca City where Mr. Hall was involved in ranching. In 1977, he went to work for the Osage Tribe and the Bureau of Indian Affairs as an engineer technician. In December 1979, he worked one year with Bruner Oil and Gas as a field foreman. Then, from December 1980 until September 1983, he worked as a production foreman for WestBell and Osage Energy, Inc.

Mr. Hall was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fairfax. Additionally, he held memberships in the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed playing golf at the Fairfax Country Club with his friends. He loved his grandkids and great-grandkids.

He is survived by his wife, Frieda of the home; and two sons, Alfred Hall III of Burbank, and Buddy Michael Hall and his wife Pauline of Rt. 3, Ponca City. Additional survivors include his seven grandchildren, John Joseph Hall, Shannon Hall Vogele and her husband Jason, Teresa Hall, Carl Seeliger and his wife Michelle, L.A. Seeliger and his wife Toni, Larry Seeliger and Cador Seeliger; and eight great-grandchildren, Garrett and Caitlyn Seeliger; Layne, Galin, Cadin and Jaylea Seeliger; and Lindsey and Brandilyn Vogele. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sally Seeliger in 1989 and his brother, Tom Hall in 1998.

Casket bearers will be the grandsons.

Eilzabeth B. Harp

Eilzabeth B. Harp, 105, former Newkirk resident, died May 30, 1999. Services were held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at the Newkirk Cemetery.

The daughter of the late John and Maria Grell, Braman, was born in Garner, Iowa, March 22, 1894. The family moved to Oklahoma when Elizabeth was about 6 years old. She had 5 brothers and 2 sisters. On December 24, 1915 she married Herman Harp at Newkirk, and they had one daughter, Audine. Mr. Harp died March 15, 1956 and in 1972 Mrs. Harp went to live with her daughter to help care for her son in law who had MS. He died in 1984 and Audine died in 1998.

Mrs. Harp was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and did not miss a ball game on television. She was well known for her cooking skills and fierce competition when it came to playing cards with her family. Her death on Memorial Day weekend was significant because it was one of her favorite times, getting together with family and friends. Corresponding with cards and letters was important to her and it paid off because even at 105 she would receive over 80 birthday cards.

Mrs. Harp also had three grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren. Other local relatives include nephews, Ivan Grell and Orvan Grell, Braman, and nieces, Elaine Fulton and Ann Spore, Newkirk.

Mrs. C. C. Hatcher

Mrs. C. C. Hatcher Dies
Was A Former Poncan

Mrs. C. C. Hatcher, former Poncan, died last Monday at Lunchburg, Texas, of a heart attack. She was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. E. Reed at the time.

Mrs. Hatcher was the mother of Mrs. E. M. Shofner of 313 South Eighth Street. She and her daughter, Miss Edna Mae, returned Friday evening from Texas where they had been for the past week. For two months during the past winter Mrs. Hatcher had lived at the Shofner home. She had a wide circle of friends in the vicinity, formed during early day residence.

Other than Mrs. Shofner and Mrs. W. E. Reed, Mrs. Hatcher is survived by a son, A. L. Hatcher of Los Angeles. Burial services were at Goose Creek, Texas.

Susana Elizabeth Henning

FAIRFAX - Susana Elizabeth Henning, resident of Fairfax, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, in the Fairfax Memorial Hospital. She was 84.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, in the First Osage Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Glasgow, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Fairfax Cemetery under the direction of Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home of Fairfax.

Susana Elizabeth Henning was born Dec. 12, 1914, in Pierre, S.D., the daughter of George W. and Affie S. Haynes Low. She married Kenneth L. Henning Aug. 15, 1931, in Thayer, Mo. They lived in several places in southern Missouri before moving to Fairfax in 1992 from Doniphan, Mo. She was a homemaker, a longtime church nursery worker and a member of First Osage Baptist Church. She enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren as well as cooking and sewing.

She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Stewart of Carrollton, Texas; two sons, Dr. Guy Eugene Henning of Fairfax and George Lawrence Henning of Doniphan, Mo.; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years on Aug. 23, 1999, and her parents.

The family will be at the Henning home to receive friends and family.




E. D. Hockman

Tonkawa - Funeral services for area farmer, Edward D. Hockman, 71, southwest of Tonkawa will be 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of the McCafferty-Bolick Funeral Home here. The Rev. John E. Blose minister of the First Christian Church will officiate and burial will be in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery southwest of Tonkawa.

Hockman died about 3 p.m. Friday at the Blackwell General Hospital, where he had been a patient for two weeks.

Born Sept. 12, 1891, at Howard, Kan., Hockman resided there until 15 years of age when he moved to the Tonkawa Vicinity.

Survivors include his wife Dortha and one son, John Thomas, of the home; one brother, Irvan Hockman of Macon, Mo., and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. George Lopeman

Mrs. Lopeman Dies After Long Illness

Mrs. George Lopeman, 65, route 3 in the Osage, died Tuesday morning at the Ponca City hospital.

Mrs. Lopeman, who lived with her husband in the home at the McCord school, had been in ill health a year and became critically ill Sunday.

Funeral services, in charge of the Miles Funeral home, are pending.

Mrs. Lopeman was born Dec. 27, 1884, at Sedan, Kan., and attended school there. She moved with her parents to Kaw City in 1899. She was married May 28, 1900, to Isaac Jones at Newkirk. Jones died in 1914.

Mrs. Lopeman moved to Ponca City from Uncas in 1935 and married George Lopeman. Mrs. Lopeman worked in McCord school cafeteria and her husband is janitor at the school.

She was a member of the Baptist Church at Pawhuska.

Survivors are her husband, a son, C. M. Jones, route 3 in the Osage, and two daughters, mrs. Inez Scott, 1319 East South Avenue, and Mrs. Goldie Payne, Pawhuska, two brothers, Erwin Blackford, Florida, and William Blackford, California, and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pawhuskan's Funeral is Held at Kaw City

Funeral services were held in Kaw City Saturday afternoon for Mrs. Ernest Lopeman of Pawhuska, 22, who died in Ponca City early Friday morning at the home of her sister. Mrs. Eugene Rice. She had suffered pneumonia and other complications following the birth of a daughter a week ago.

The funeral rites were conducted at the Methodist church in Kaw City by the Rev. J. J. Franklin, pastor of Immanuel Baptist church of this city. He was assisted by Harold Collins of Bethel Tabernacle, by the Rev. W. A. Bryan, Baptist pastor at Burbank and by the Rev. E. N. Calhoun, Baptist pastor at Kaw City.

Assisting with the services was the Rev. W. H. McGowen of Oneta, N. Y., uncle of Mrs. Lopeman. He happened to be visiting in the state when he received the message twlling of his niece's death. The Whitlock funeral home was in charge.

Mrs. Lopeman was the former Esther Pauline McGowen. She is survived by her husband, by her infant daughter, by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James M. McGowen, and four brothers, Harold, Tommie and Loren McGowen, all of Osage county, and Virgil McGowen of Lavern; two sisters, mrs. Eugene Ri?? and Mrs. Lewis Yeager of Ponca City. Mrs. Lopeman had lived in and near Ponca City and Kaw City most of her life.

Thelma Mae Maupin

Thelma Mae Maupin, longtime Newkirk resident, died Friday morning, Jan. 12, 2001 in Newkirk Nursing Center. She was 91.

The daughter of William Sol and Victoria (Nowlin) Dotson, she was born Sept. 21, 1909 at Protem, MO. She came with her family from Protem to Wynnewood, OK by covered wagon. She received her education in Wynnewood, Newkirk, Enid and Fairview, where she graduated from Fairview High School with the class of 1928. After graduation she moved to Enid and was employed as a telephone operator. In 1938 she moved to Newkirk and helped her father operate the Hilltop Grocery.

On Sept. 2, 1939 she and Robert Louis Maupin were married at Arkansas City. They established their first home on the Goodson Ranch in the Hardy Community. A year later they moved to the Deer Creek Community where they lived for a time before moving to Peckham. She was employed as a telephone operator for an independent telephone company in Peckham before Southwestern Bell came to the area. They later moved to a farm west of Newkirk. She served as librarian for the Newkirk Public Library for 20 years. Mr. Maupin died Nov. 3, 1988.

She was a charter member of the Newkirk Church of Christ and a member of the Grant Card Club. She enjoyed reading, her church activities, and working as a volunteer at the nursing center.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Gary R. and Elizabeth Maupin of Newkirk and W. Kirk and Patty Maupin of Broken Arrow; one daughter and her husband, Vicki I. and Robert Colvin of Leawood, KS; eight grandchildren, James R. Maupin, Lea Beth Meyer, Lisa A. Maupin, Brenda K. Choate, Jeffrey A Maupin, Jamie L Edison, Michael R. Colvin and Marti D. Colvin; and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband Bob, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Arch Dotson.

A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15 in Newkirk Cemetery with Danny W. Cornish, minister of the Newkirk Church of Christ officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service.

Edna Kate Pappan

Edna Kate Pappan, longtime Newkirk resident, died May 9, 2002 in Medicalodge East Healthcare Center, Arkansas City. She was 100.

The daughter of Willie and Kate (Shroyer) Cooper, she was born March 19, 1902 on the Cooper homestead four miles north of the Arkansas river east of Newkirk. She grew up on the homestead and received her education at Cooper Rural School. She later attended business school in Arkansas City.

When they were both 18, Edna married Raymond Bellmard. Jan. 1922 in Newkirk, and they made their home in Kay County and had three children.

A musician, he died at the age of 24. His last performance was playing for the dedication of the new Kay County Courthouse in Oct. of 1926.

After his death, she purchased a home in Newkirk where she lived for more than 60 years. She married Maurice Pappan March 29, 1929. An ironworker by trade, he moved his new family all over the United States coast to coast where he built bridges. Mr. Pappan died April 2, 1988.

Edna spent a year in Rome, Italy in 1963 and another year in Ankara, Turkey in 1967, visiting her daughter and grandchildren while her son-in-law was stationed with the military in those countries. During her later years, she made her home with her daughter.

A member of the First Baptist Church, Edna was the oldest member of the Kaw Tribe and the only original land allottee living.

She is survived by her daughter, Colleen Bellmard of Newkirk; a sister, Anna Brewer of Farmington, NM; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to both husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Bellmard in 1933, a son, Sam Bellmard in 2000, her parents and 12 brothers and sisters.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. May 11 in the Washunga Cemetery, Newkirk, with the Rev. Pernina Weatherman, minister of the Newkirk Assembly of God, officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service.





Andrew C. Reynolds

Andrew C. Reynolds of 520 North Peachtree died Saturday evening at home. He was 65.

Born April 17, 1919, in Wagoner, Okla., he was the son of John and Leola Reynolds. He grew up in the Wagoner area. As a boy he joined the "Civilian Conservation Corps". During World War II he served in the U.S. Marines as a rifleman.

He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 120 and the American Legion Huff Minor Post 14.

He and Mary Louise Kirk were married in Ponca City in 1944. Reynolds was a retired welder boilermaker for Conoco.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise, a son, James Larry Reynolds of Marland four brothers, J.E. Reynolds of Ponca City, Joe Reynolds of Yale, Okla, Howard Reynolds of Oklahoma City and J.P. Reynolds of Norman , two sisters, Loriene LaHue of Shawnee and Dorothy Herman of Bandon, Ore. and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and a daughter.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the First Baptist Church with Dr. Evans T. Moseley officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of E.M. Trout and Sons Funeral Directors.

Caskerbearers will be W. R. Schwarz, Leroy Petty, Eddie Snyder and Herbert Hopkins.

John Eugene Reynolds

John Eugene "Gene" Reynolds died Friday morning, June 29, 2001, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was 84.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2001, at the First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Hance Dilbeck presiding. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.

Gene Reynolds was born June 26, 1917, in Wagoner, the oldest of eight children born to John Emery Reynolds and Leola Evelyn (Williams) Reynolds. He attended the Wagoner public schools. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the mid 1930s prior to moving to Drumright. He was married to Viola Spencer on April 7, 1939, in Chandler, making their first home in Drumright.

Mr. Reynolds began work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company on Jan. 15, 1941. In 1945, he was relocated to Ponca City and worked in the outside construction department until May of 1949 when he was transferred to Stillwater as outside service foreman. He remained in this position until September 1968 when he was transferred back to Ponca City to the engineering department. He remained in this position until his retirement in June of 1979 with 38 1/2 years of service.

He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Ponca City and a member of the Men's Fellowship Class. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 83 of Ponca City and the Telephone Pioneers of America, where he had earlier served in the positions of president and vice president. His enjoyments included fishing, hunting and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Viola, of the home; one son, Dr. Donald E. Reynolds and wife, Hedi of Memphis, Tenn.; one sister, Dorothy Herman; one granddaughter, Kristin Renee LeVoyer and husband, Dr. Thomas LeVoyer; two great-grandchildren, Sean Matthew and Avery Nicole LeVoyer. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Andrew Clayton Reynolds, Troy F. Reynolds, Joseph D. Reynolds, James P. Reynolds and Howard Reynolds; and one sister, Loriene LaHue.

Casket bearers will be Hudson Holder, Coolidge Campbell, Wallace Weaver, Sam Cauthon, Tom Skaggs and Forrest Radcliff. Honorary casket bearers will be members of the Men's Fellowship Sunday school class.

Blance Rhoades

Blanche Rhoades Dies at Age 63....Ponca City News..August 28, 1966

Mrs. Blance Rhoades, 63, wife of Warren B. Rhoades, died this morning in the Oklahoma Medical Research Center, where she had been a patient since August 5. She had been ill since the middle of July.

Mrs. Rhoades was born June 7, 1903 at Pawnee, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hazelbaker. She received her education at Pawnee and as a young woman moved to Tonkawa.

On Nov. 12. 1926 she was married to Warren B. Rhoades at Perry and they established their home in Tonkawa, where they lived for 30 years before coming to Ponca City.

She was a member of the First Christian Church. Art was her hobby and she worked in oil, charcoal and pen and ink.

Surviving her are her husband of the home, 519 South Second, a daughter, Mrs. Bonita Riger of Dewey, one brother, Harvey Hazelbaker of Long Beach; four sisters, Mrs. Alma Ireland of Orange Cove, Calif and Mrs. Okla Cather, Mrs. Opal Sneed and Mrs. Florence Byers of Pawnee and four grand children. Mrs. Rhoades was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of the Grace Memorial Chapel with Lewis Corporon, associate minister of the First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.

The casket will not be opened at the service. Friends may drop by the funeral home up until time for the service.




Charles N. Rhoades

Charles N. Rhoades Dies; Funeral Set

Charles N. Rhoades, 48, died at 3 o'clock this morning at the local hospital. Suffering from heart trouble for the past several years, he had been taken to the hospital following a severe heart attack early Saturday morning.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Orphia Rhoades, one daughter, Mrs. Mavis Haley, and a granddaughter, Carol Ann Haley, all of this city. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Emma Hand of Jerseyville, Ill, and Mrs. Mary Shanks of near Jerseyville, and three brothers, Orville Rhoades of Jerseyville, Everett Rhoades of Carrolton, Ill., and Andrew Rhoades of Kane. Ill.

Rhoades, who lived at 316 East Grand avenue, was born in Jerseyville on Sept. 9, 1898, and moved to Alton, Ill, while still a boy. He completed a course through the International Correspendence School of Scranton, Pa., and came to Shamrock, Okla., in July 1919. He was employed by the Oklahoma Gas and Electric company there at the time of his marriage on Dec. 19, 1919 in Drumright. He and Mrs. Rhoades made their home in Shamrock until coming to Ponca City in 1926.

Upon arriving in this city, Rhoades accepted a position with the old Marland Oil company under M. E. Saux. During the following years, he worked his way up from a switchboard operator to superintendent of the power division of the Continental Oil company, later joining the engineering staff there. Since his retirement three years ago, he has assisted his wife in operating the Rhoades Music store.

Rhoades was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Modern Woodmen's lodge.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the First Methodist church with the Rev. Edwin W. Parker, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F cemetery under the direction of the ??? Funeral Home.




Mrs. Clara Rhoades

Resident of City Since 1925 Dies...Ponca City News. July 22, 1975

Longtime area resident and wife of the Rev. Frank Rhoades, Mrs. Clara Rhoades died Monday afternoon at her home, 529 North Ninth after a long illness.

Born in Caldwell, Kan, Aug 5, 1900, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Collins, she moved with her family to Ringwood where she completed her education and taught school.

In 1925 she was married to Frank Rhoades in Ponca City and the couple had resided here since that time. He is the retired minister of Bethel Tabernacle Church and Mrs. Rhoades assisted him in his ministry. On May 30, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Survivors included her husband on the home; 3 daughters, Mrs. Harry L. (Norma) Johnson, 3101 Kingston, Mrs. Harvey (Pat) Fix, east of city and Miss Geraldine Rhoades, Houston; 3 sisters. Mrs. Paul Irwin, 920 North Pine, Mrs. W. F. Gossen and Mrs. Alma Burke, both of Portland, Ore; 3 brothers, Carl Collins. Brownsville, Tex, Wibler Collins, Sulphur, La., and George Collins; Long Beach, Calif and 6 granddaughters and 2 great-grandsons.

Mrs. Rhoades was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters and 1 brother.

The service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Ted Rankin, Tulsa, officiating. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery under the direction of E.M. Trout and Sons Funeral Home.

Mrs. Maud Rhoads, 77 years old, died about 4 o'clock Monday morning at her home in Nardin.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Gen Rhoads of Roswell, N.M.: two nieces, Mrs. Mable Williams of Roswell and Mrs. Anna Kerns of Nardin; and two nephews Roy and Carl Rhoads of Wichita, Kan.

DEATH CLAIMS WARREN RHOADES...Ponca City News. October 10, 1968

Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Friday at Resthaven Memorial Park in Ponca City for Warren Rhoades, 90, who died Wednesday morning in Washington County Memorial Hospital at Bartlesville.

Preceding the service here will be funeral rites in the chapel of Dewey (Okla.) Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m.

Rhoades, a retired carpenter, had lived the past 15 years in Ponca City and before that for more than 30 years in Tonkawa.

He had been in ill health the past year and spent his time alternately in Ponca City and a home of a daughter in Bartlesville.

He was a member of Ponca City First Christian Church and a past member of Ponca City Odd Fellows Lodge.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Eldon (Bonita) Rieger of Bartlesville, and two nieces, Mrs. Inez McClean, Tonkawa, and Mrs. Opal Wilgus, Novelty, MO




Elizabeth Francis Scott

Elizabeth Francis Scott, longtime Newkirk resident, died Monday, April 1, 2002 in the Sandia Hospice Pavilion, Albuquerque, NM. She was 89.

Her funeral has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6 in the Newkirk First United Methodist Church with the Rev. James C. Hollifield officiating. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery, Pryor, OK. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. Scott will lie in state at the funeral home Friday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. A memorial fund has been established with the First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk 74647-0468.

Elizabeth Francis Scott was born July 12, 1912 in Pryor, OK, the daughter of Tib and Lydia Williams. She grew up and attended school in Pryor. On Jan. 11, 1928 she and Robert Andrew Scott were married in Wagner, OK. They established their first home in the Pryor area where they lived until 1937 when they moved to Grainola, OK. They farmed in the Grainola area for a number of years before moving to Newkirk in 1969. She served for several years as school cafeteria director in Grainola and Newkirk. Mr. Scott died March 16, 1998.

Elizabeth was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the UMW. She was also a member of the Bois d'Arc Club, the Golden Agers Card Club, the Grant Card Club and the Over 60 Club. She enjoyed quilting.

She is survived by one son and his wife, Ellis B. and Shirley Scott of Albuquerque; her grandchildren, Donette Wagner of Albuquerque, Dacia and Rick Roberts of San Antonio and Steven Ellis Scott of Albuquerque; and three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Lois Roberts attending Cornell College in Mount Vernon, IA, Chad Eldon Wagner attending the University of New Mexico and Ellis Jeffery Roberts, a high school student in San Antonio, TX.

In addition to her husband Bob, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Those serving as casket bearers will be Bill Birdwell, Keith Birdwell, Larry Gross, Terry Teague, Robert Kirkpatrick and Chad Wagner. Honorary bearers are Jack Haney, Johnny Means, Chris Vap, David Vap and Curtis Vap.





Leila F. Shaw

Leila F. Shaw, resident of Albuquerque, NM, died Sunday, March 24, 2002 in Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Idaho Falls, ID. She was 93.

The daughter of Joseph William and LaVina (Brown) Carpenter, she was born Feb 21, 1909 in Newkirk. She received her early education in the Kaw City and Newkirk areas and graduated from Newkirk High School in 1927. She attended and graduated from Northwest State University. She then taught school in Albuquerque and California.

On June 8, 1930, Leila and Clarence Eddie Shaw were married in Newkirk. Mr. Shaw died Dec. 29, 1958.

Leila was a member of Monte Vista Christian Church and the Sew and Sew Club in Albuquerque. She enjoyed quilting.

She is survived by one son, Robert Don Shaw of Upland, CA; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Clarence, she was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Marion L. Carpenter.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Monte Vista Christian Church in Albuquerque with the Rev. Fred W. Dorisse officiating. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 1 in Newkirk Cemetery with Danny W. Cornish, minister of the Church of Christ officiating. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service was in charge of local arrangements.

 



Jeremiah Jeffrey Smith

STILWELL - Jeremiah Jeffrey Smith died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, in Stilwell. He was 21.

The funeral service was held Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at 10 a.m. at Hart Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Stilwell. Burial was in Oak Valley Cemetery, Fort Chaffee, Ark., under the direction of Hart Funeral Home.

Jeremiah Jeffrey Smith was born Dec. 7, 1977, in Anaheim, Calif., the son of Kim Jeffrey Henderson and Edna Fay Parks. On Feb. 16, 1996, he married Amy Slavens in Fayetteville, Ark. He was employed as a forklift operator for Mrs. Smith’s Bakeries.

Jeremiah is survived by his wife of Ponca City; two sons, Damion Dewayne Smith and Dereck James Smith, both of Ponca City; a daughter, Shayla Corrine Smith of Ponca City; his mother, Edna Wetzel of Stilwell; two sisters, Karrie Michell Culley of Lavaca, Ark., and Melissa Dawn Wetzel of Stilwell; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Harry Forrest Wetzel.

 



Edith Miller Edith (Kennedy) Miller

Edith Miller Edith (Kennedy) Miller of Newkirk, passed away Friday, Jan. 3, 2003 at the Via Christi Oklahoma Regional Medical Center in Ponca City. Mrs. Miller was 86 years of age.

Miller was born March 20, 1916 at Washunga, OK. to Leon A. and Sarina Maude (Farnsworth) Kennedy. She was raised and received her education in the Washunga area. She had lived in Oklahoma City and in Florida.

On April 28, 1980, she was united in marriage to Francis "Red" Miller in Valdosta, GA. After their marriage, they moved to Kaw City from Florida. For the past 10 years, they have resided in Newkirk. Mrs.

Miller was one of the elder members of the Kaw Tribe, had been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and had been baptized in the First Christian Church of Kaw City.

Survivors include her husband of the home and a niece in Washington state.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and a brother.

At her request, she was cremated and no formal services were held. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to the McCafferty-Bolick-Green Funeral Home of Tonkawa.

Obituaries

Eilzabeth B. Harp

Eilzabeth B. Harp, 105, former Newkirk resident, died May 30, 1999. Services were held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at the Newkirk Cemetery.

The daughter of the late John and Maria Grell, Braman, was born in Garner, Iowa, March 22, 1894. The family moved to Oklahoma when Elizabeth was about 6 years old. She had 5 brothers and 2 sisters. On December 24, 1915 she married Herman Harp at Newkirk, and they had one daughter, Audine. Mr. Harp died March 15, 1956 and in 1972 Mrs. Harp went to live with her daughter to help care for her son in law who had MS. He died in 1984 and Audine died in 1998.

Mrs. Harp was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and did not miss a ball game on television. She was well known for her cooking skills and fierce competition when it came to playing cards with her family. Her death on Memorial Day weekend was significant because it was one of her favorite times, getting together with family and friends. Corresponding with cards and letters was important to her and it paid off because even at 105 she would receive over 80 birthday cards.

Mrs. Harp also had three grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren. Other local relatives include nephews, Ivan Grell and Orvan Grell, Braman, and nieces, Elaine Fulton and Ann Spore, Newkirk.

Francis Hazel Curfman

Francis Hazel Curfman, Ponca City resident and formerly of Newkirk, died Monday afternoon, May 31, 1999 in Tender Heart Care Center, Ponca City. She was 81.

The daughter of Jesse Franklin and Reba (Showalter) Simmons, she was born March 14, 1918 at Greensburg, Kansas. One of 10 children, she and her family lived in several areas of Kansas and Oklahoma where her father worked on ranches and in oil fields. She received her education in South Haven, Kansas. After leaving school she worked as a cook at the Rock Cliff Ranch near Ponca City.

On June 4, 1939 she and Paul William Curfman were married at Jefferson, Oklahoma. They made their home on a farm southwest of Braman until 1947 when they moved to a farm east of Newkirk. Mr. Curfman died July 4, 1967. In 1983 she moved to Ponca City where she has since resided.

She was a member of the Newkirk First United Methodist Church, the Prime Timers, and the Women's International Bowling Congress. In addition to traveling and bowling, she enjoyed flowers and crocheting.

She is survived by on son and his wife, Donnie and Lynn Curfman of Ponca City; two daughters and their husbands, Pauline and Bill Coats of Shidler, and Janit and Joe Blakey of Ponca City; two brothers, Bob Simmons of Winfield and Vernie Simmons of Wellington; two sisters, Freda Fry of Liberal, Kansas and Darlene Hiltzman of Oxford, Kansas; 12 grandchildren, Kellie Hudson and Cindie Hoy, both of Ponca City, Joni Short of Ada, Carla Wilson of Hamilton, Illinois, Justin Jenkins, Joby Blakey and Mike Curfman, all of Ponca City, Susie Hoyl of Sulphur, Tracey Curfman and Kristi Hunter, both of Ponca City, Lezlee Locke of Hardy and William Don Curfman of Ponca City; and 24 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Paul, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Leonard Simmons and Floyd Rader and three sisters, Thelma Biddle, Garna Rich and Lucille Tohlman.

The funeral has been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 3 in the Newkirk Christ's Church with the Rev. J. Craig Ortwein officiating. Burial is to follow in Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service.

Those serving as casket bearers will be Marion Simmons, Max Simmons, Gary Simmons, Bob Biddle, Art Biddle, and Dick Biddle. Grandsons will be honorary bearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.


 

Nancy Geneva (Jenkins) Davis

Nancy Geneva (Jenkins) Davis, 90, of Arkansas City, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001 at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery. Pastor James Newman officiated.

Nancy was born Sept. 8, 1910 in Kay County, OK to Thomas E. and Myrtle C. "Lottie" (Gregory) Jenkins. She was reared and educated in the Kay County and Bixby, OK areas.

Nancy married Samuel F. Davis, Jr. on Sept. 2, 1930, in Newkirk. The couple made their home in the Newkirk area for a short time before moving to Arkansas City in 1931. Nancy was a homemaker and member of the First Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include two sons, Gary of Arkansas City, Tom of Jennings, LA; two daughters, Delores Guilinger of Olathe, KS and Jollene Hunt of Arkansas City; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Sam in 1993, two grandsons, one brother and one sister.

A memorial has been established with the First Assembly of God Church of Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements were made by the Rindt-ErdmanFuneral Home of Arkansas City.


 

Thelma Mae Maupin

Thelma Mae Maupin, longtime Newkirk resident, died Friday morning, Jan. 12, 2001 in Newkirk Nursing Center. She was 91.

The daughter of William Sol and Victoria (Nowlin) Dotson, she was born Sept. 21, 1909 at Protem, MO. She came with her family from Protem to Wynnewood, OK by covered wagon. She received her education in Wynnewood, Newkirk, Enid and Fairview, where she graduated from Fairview High School with the class of 1928.

After graduation she moved to Enid and was employed as a telephone operator. In 1938 she moved to Newkirk and helped her father operate the Hilltop Grocery.

On Sept. 2, 1939 she and Robert Louis Maupin were married at Arkansas City. They established their first home on the Goodson Ranch in the Hardy Community. A year later they moved to the Deer Creek Community where they lived for a time before moving to Peckham.

She was employed as a telephone operator for an independent telephone company in Peckham before Southwestern Bell came to the area. They later moved to a farm west of Newkirk. She served as librarian for the Newkirk Public Library for 20 years. Mr. Maupin died Nov. 3, 1988.

She was a charter member of the Newkirk Church of Christ and a member of the Grant Card Club. She enjoyed reading, her church activities, and working as a volunteer at the nursing center.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Gary R. and Elizabeth Maupin of Newkirk and W. Kirk and Patty Maupin of Broken Arrow; one daughter and her husband, Vicki I. and Robert Colvin of Leawood, KS; eight grandchildren, James R. Maupin, Lea Beth Meyer, Lisa A. Maupin, Brenda K. Choate, Jeffrey A Maupin, Jamie L Edison, Michael R. Colvin and Marti D. Colvin; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Bob, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Arch Dotson.

A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15 in Newkirk Cemetery with Danny W. Cornish, minister of the Newkirk Church of Christ officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service.

A memorial fund has been established with the Newkirk Church of Christ. Contributions may be made through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk 74647-0468.

 


DANIEL WEBSTER WEAVER

Daniel Webster Weaver, 90, of 200 South Eighth, died at his home Thursday afternoon.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Evans T. Moseley officiating. Burial will be in the Rest Haven Cemetery under direction of Gill's Funeral Home.

Weaver was born in Pembrook, N. C., on Feb. 4, 1876, and moved with his parents at the age of seven to Leonard, Tex. On Nov. 17, 1897,  he was married to Miss. Elizabeth Haynes in Lebanon, Tex. They would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in November.

Moving to Ponca City in 1918 from Bridgeport, Tex., he had lived here since. Weaver, a retired building contractor, was a Mason and a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Route 5 and Walter W., Denver, Colo.; three daughters, Mrs. W. D. Pfeiffer, Ponca City, Mrs. John R. Warren, Oklahoma City, and Mrs. Scott E. Strahan, Winter Park, Fla.; 12 grand-children and 21 great-grandchildren.

2nd Lt. US Army WWI Death claims D. Max Morgan... (Ponca City News) D. Max Morgan, 76 a resident of Ponca City since 1922, died unexpectedly during the night tuesday at the Jennis-Murle ??? Hotel where he made his home.  Morgan was a geologist for Lew Wentz for many years and later was associated with Glenn C. clark.  He was born Aug. 18, 1891 in Jackson Ohio.  Arrangements are pending at the Gill-Lessert Funeral Home.



Mrs. Walker's Rites are Held At Round Grove.
Graveside services were held Sunday for Mrs. Cindy Walker, 79, who was killed Wednesday whe a tornado struck Udall, Kan. The Rev. P. T. Stanford officiated. Burial was in the Round Grove Cemetery west of Ponca City with the Morris Funeral Home of Winfield, Kan., in charge of services.
Mrs. Walker is survived by two sons, Roy Walker of Spokane, Wash., and Maj. Gen. Roy Walker of the U. S. Army, stationed at San Angelo, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. Cliff J. Frantz of Waco, Tex; one brother, Joe Lewis, Wichita, Kan.; a granddaughter and grandson, both of Portland, Ore.; two cousins, Mrs. Mary Cornwell, 342 South Lake Street and J. H. Keathly, 314 North Elm, Ponca City; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Out-of-town relatives here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Cliff J. Frantz, Waka, Tex.; Irl Frantz of Hartley, Tex.; Mrs. Nadine Frantz, Gruver, Tex.; Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. Starcher and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Jeffries, all of Wichita, Kan.; and Mr. and Mrs. Cleve Crenshaw and Miss Dell Wilson of Hominy.
Pallbearers were Herbert Keathly, Walter Keathly, Marx Keathly, W. C. Keathly, Irl Frantz and Dale Drassen.
