Funeral service for Ruth A. Smith,73, was held Monday, August 22, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bible Baptist Church in Cherokee with Rev. Harold Hughbanks and Rev. Jack Lowe officiating. Burial will be in the Alva Municipal Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home of Cherokee. Ruth was born on May 28th, 1929 at Fargo, Oklahoma, the daughter of Ernest Lee and Agatha Elizabeth (Keenan) Morgan and went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, August 24th, 2002 at Share Medical Center in Alva, Oklahoma. She graduated from Fargo High School and later married Earnest E. Smith at Higgins, Texas. After their marriage, they lived around Wheeler, Texas and Perryton, Texas where they worked on various ranches. In 1962 they moved to Alva where she worked alongside her husband at the Kerr McGee and DX Service Stations as owners and rivals. After retirement, her husband preceded her in death in 1986. After this, Ruth moved to Cherokee where she was a member of the Bible Baptist Church serving as church secretary and teaching Sunday school. She was also a caregiver working in nursing homes and hospitals, and then later caring for people in their homes. Survivors include her children and their spouses: Marilyn West, Lena and V. T. Roach, Paul Smith, Violet Smith and Steve Hanson, Debra and George Highfill, Kathryn Ruff, Everett Smith; two brothers, George Morgan and Leo Morgan; fifteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sons, David, Ernie, and James Michael, one great-grandchild, four brothers, and three sisters. Memorials may be made to Cherokee Bible Baptist Church through Lanman Funeral Home of Cherokee.
