SMITH, FAITH ELIZABETH (WHITE) 1912-2002
Faith Elizabeth (White) Smith, age 89, a resident of Lakewood, Ohio since early 1942, except for three years in the mid 1950's spent in Belle Plaine, Kansas, a former school teacher, a member of the Order of Eastern Star, and a second generation and life long member of the Methodist Church, died of congestive heart failure on Monday, March 11, 2002 at 12:40 A.M. at Ennis Court, Lakewood, Ohio. Mrs. Smith first taught school in Oklahoma, then later in Lakewood schools after moving to Lakewood, Ohio when her husband, a lumberyard manager, was transferred from Tonkawa, Oklahoma to the Cleveland, Ohio area by the Rock Island Lumber Company in April 1942. Mrs. Smith was born on the White family farm, two miles south of Aline, Oklahoma to Amos Graves and Olive Faith (Ferguson) White on September 21, 1912. There she grew to adulthood with her older brother Max White. She was raised in, then following her parents footsteps, joined the Aline Methodist Church. She graduated Aline High School on May 15, 1930, attended Northwestern State Teacher's College, Alva, Oklahoma, receiving her Oklahoma Life Teaching Certificate June 3, 1932 and began teaching at Hog Ranch School, a rural one-room school in Major County, Oklahoma. Mrs. Smith married her high school sweetheart, Walter J. Smith on June 16, 1935 on her parent's family farm and moved to Belle Plaine, Kansas for the first time. She suspended her teaching career to provide a wonderful home environment for her husband as he was transferred to Wichita, Kansas, to Tonkawa, Oklahoma, and then to Cleveland, Ohio, raising their three children, providing a supportive home environment for her family, and continuing her teaching career. Later, she provided support to her daughter by caring for her twin grandsons while her daughter pursued a career as a third generation teacher. Over the years, Mrs. Smith was a member and active participant in the Order of Eastern Star, receiving her 50 year pin; the Aline Methodist Church; the Belle Plaine Methodist Church, the Lakewood United Methodist Church, joining on April 6, 1952, the Benedict Class, responsible for keeping records and served on several committees, the United Methodist Women, the Susanna Circle, serving as leader for several years and Sunshine chairperson; and several bridge clubs, the Genealogy Society and the Alfalfa County Historical Society. She was preceded in death by her father, Amos G. White on February 28, 1950, her brother, Max F. White on November 18, 1960, her niece, Karla (White) Jacobson on November 24, 1964, her mother, Olive (Ferguson) White on January 29, 1978 and her beloved husband, Walter J. Smith on October 30, 1980. Mrs. Smith is survived by two sons, Roger E. Smith of Forest Heights, Maryland and Eugene L. Smith (wife, Patricia) of North Olmstead, Ohio, daughter Charlene A. (Smith) Williams of Lakewood, Ohio; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews and friends innumerable. Memorial service was held at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 15700 Detroit Avenue, Thursday, March 14, at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Celebration of Life service and interment was at the family plot at Aline Star Cemetery, on Monday, March 18 at 11:00 a.m. facilitated by the Lanman Funeral Home of Helena with Rev. Lyle Shipley officiating. Family suggests memorial contributions to Lakewood United Methodist Church, Aline United Methodist Church, Alfalfa County Historical Society, Aline Alumni Scholarship Fund or Homesteader's Original Sod House Historical Site.
