SCHUBER, DANIEL WALTER 1911-1923
WALTER SCHUBER FATALLY INJURED - Daniel Walter Schuber was born October 11, 1911 at Okeene, Oklahoma, and died at the Holcombe Hospital, Tuesday, August 14, 1923, age 11 years, 10 months and 3 days. Walter had just driven to the field where his father was plowing with a tractor. His father had been having some trouble with the tractor and was just getting it started when Walter arrived. In some manner, the fan belt and fan became tangled and a blade of the fan flew off and struck Walter on the right side. Although the flesh was not cut, it was realized that he was seriously hurt. A doctor was called and later Walter was brought to town and taken to the Holcombe Hospital. The accident occurred about 2 o'clock in the afternoon and at 6:45 Walter was operated on in an endeavor to save his life. The operation showed that he was fatally injured and the doctors gave no hope of his recovery as the blade of the tractor fan had crushed him internally. He died the next day at 5:05 p.m. Walter is gone, a bright and cheerful, happy boy, who carried sunshine wherever he went. He always had a pleasant smile and a pleasant word for everybody. His death comes as a dark shadow to his many friends and to his relatives who loved him so dearly. Walter was a faithful attendant at the Christian Sunday School, being a member of the Wide-A-Wake Sunday School Class, and was also Secretary and Treasurer of the Junior Christian Endeavor, an organization for boys and girls. He will be greatly missed by his Sunday school teacher, class and Junior Superintendent. No one can take his place, as he was a favorite with all. He was a member of the 5th grade at school and was much loved by his teacher. He leaves to mourn his loss, a father, mother, five sisters, Mrs. A. H. Rusch, Mrs. W. S. Allen, Mabel, Agnes, and Alma, and one brother, Jerome, and other relatives. Rev. Henry Rusch, Rev. George Reuber of Bessie, and Rev. Frederick Werner delivered the funeral services. R. F. Howley was the undertaker in charge. Only the memory of this lovely boy is left, how sweet, how uplifting its influence. For after all, death is but the slipping off of the outer body. "God took him away with him above. He's taken him there for him to love. It may be hard but it's really best, for we know now that he lies at rest". Poem by sister Agnes Schuber.
