PHARIS, MABLE MAE (SMITH) 1918-2002
Funeral services for Mable Mae Pharis, 83, were held on Saturday, February 23, 2002 at the Fairview First Church of the Nazarene. The Reverend Chuck McKinney officiated. Burial followed in the Fairview Cemetery under the direction of the Fairview Funeral Home, Inc. Mable was born December 19, 1918 in Konawa, Oklahoma to William "Bill" T. and Mae (Spivey) Smith and died February 20, 2002 at Fairview Hospital in Fairview, Oklahoma after a long battle with cancer. At the age of 8, Mable moved with her family to the Fairview, Oklahoma area. She attended the Union School and then went to Longdale High School. As a young girl she worked in the homes of many people taking care of their children, milking and cooking during harvest time. On March 7, 1939 Mable married Charley Floyd Pharis in Anthony, Kansas. After their marriage they lived in the Dane community west of Fairview. In 1949 they moved to Fairview where she worked for the old TG&Y on Main Street for over 20 years. She worked at Otasco for about 10 years and then the Fairview Fellowship Home where she worked in the kitchen. Mable also worked at the Major County Court House as a secretary and receptionist for the Early Settlement. She retired in 1997 but always kept busy. Mable was very active in the First Church of the Nazarene holding such positions as Sunday School Teacher, Church Board and Secretary. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and truly loved spending time with all children. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and excelled at quilting. She spent many pleasant hours visiting with her friends and family while sitting and sewing on her front porch swing. Mable was a very strong and independent lady that provided strength for her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by many. She is survived by her daughter, Jean Marlin of Rogers, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Cheryl Lohmann and her husband John of Greenbrier, Arkansas, Justin Lamle and his wife Mitchie of Enid, Oklahoma, and Barbie Nightingale and her husband Doug of Fairview, Oklahoma; three brothers, Jim Smith and his wife Donna, Kenneth Smith and his wife Kathy, both of Missoula, Montana, and Jack Smith and his wife Helen of Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, Willie Pearl Fortune and her husband Cletus of Delta, Colorado, and Jo Goyen of Fairview, Oklahoma; five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, daughter, Peggy Lamle, and son-in-law John Marlin, two brothers, Thelbert Smith and Allan Smith, and one sister, Orene Carpenter.
