Virginia Lee Hayes Thomas, 85-year-old lifetime Checotah resident died suddenly at her home Sunday, February 1, 2015. She was born to Lee and Esther (James) Hayes on June 16, 1929, in Wichita, KS. Virginia grew up in Brush Hill and attended Onapa School. After graduating from Checotah High School in 1946, she worked for the county Superintendent of Schools.

She married Marvin "Buddy" Thomas on December 3, 1949 in Eufaula, OK. After his death, she worked for Parman-Payne Clinic, McIntosh County Sheriff's Office, and later as a bookkeeper for Onapa Rural Water District. Virginia was a cattle rancher and an avid gardener. Her cooking was legendary. She was tough, hardworking, and "Ma" to her beloved children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She attended the Assembly of God Church for many years where she served as a Sunday school secretary.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Buddy Thomas and daughter, Connie Jean Thomas.

She is lovingly survived by her children, Tim Thomas and his wife Kinny of Eufaula and Carolyn Thomas Martin and her husband Dusty of Edmond; grandchildren, Thad Thomas Martin and his wife Elichia of Edmond, Leah Thomas Martin Kasenurm and her husband Kyle of Edmond, Hayes Thomas Martin of Tulsa, Lillie Thomas Martin of Edmond, Leslie Glover and her husband Tony of Wills Point, Texas and Clint Davis and his wife Brittany of Tahlequah. Virginia is also survived by her great grandchildren, Jocelyn Elise Martin, Emerson Thomas Martin, Brayden Juarez, Gunner Juarez, and Lakelyn Davis as well as other extended family and a lifetime of friends. She has fought a good fight. She has finished the course. She has kept the faith.

Viewing for Virginia will be from Noon-7PM on Thursday, February 5, 2015 with her family greeting friends from 5-7PM at Garrett Family Funeral Home. Services celebrating the life of Virginia will be held at 10AM on Friday, February 6, 2015 at the Serenity Chapel of Garrett Family Funeral Home with Reverend Anthony Thomas officiating. Committal prayers and Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett. Thad Martin, Elichia Martin, Kyle Kasenurm, Leah Kasenurm, Hayes Martin, and Lillie Martin will serve as Casket Bearers.
