William Ruel Bain Sr., passed from this life Wednesday, August 10, 2016 in Antlers, Oklahoma at the age of 85.Ruel was born
February 15, 1931 south of Valliant, Oklahoma to William Oscar
and Reba Hisaw Bain.
He grew up south of Valliant and attended Valliant schools
graduating with honors in 1949. He then attended Eastern A&M
College and Oklahoma A&M where in 1953 he earned a BS in Animal
Husbandry. Ruel married Shirley Elliott December 25, 1952 in
Valliant, Oklahoma. Ruel served in the US Army and then returned
to college in Stillwater and earned his Master's Degree in
Agronomy (Soil Science) graduating in 1958. He worked for OSU
for several years and continued his educational studies.
In 1961 he began working at Blackwell, Oklahoma for the USDA
Soil Conservation Service as a Soil Scientist and later moved to
Antlers with the SCS. He completed a soil survey of Pushmataha
County and assisted in adjoining counties until becoming
District Conservationist in 1976. In 1987 he worked out of
McAlester as the Area Soil Scientist for Eastern Oklahoma until
he retired in 1994.
Throughout his life he never met a stranger. He enjoyed meeting
people and telling stories, jokes and anecdotes. He also shared
stories of the family history with his children and
grandchildren. He learned to call bids at an early age and
worked auctions for over sixty years. He had a passion for his
auctioneer work doing many with his wife and son for community
organizations and charity. Ruel was a fiddle player and could
play most other stringed instruments. He has been a member of
the Antlers community for 53 years and during that time he has
been a member of the First Baptist Church of Antlers, were he
taught Sunday school for several years. He has also been a
member of Oklahoma State University Alumni Association, the
Masonic Lodge in Valliant, Kiamichi Quarterhorse Association,
and worked with the Gideon's for several years.
He began life near his Grandfather Hisaw's ferry on Red River,
was baptised in Garland Creek near his birthplace, was married
in the Southern Baptist Parsonage in Valliant and will be buried
in the Valliant Cemetery not far from the place of his birth
with seven direct ancestors and numerous aunts, uncles and
cousins.
Ruel is preceded in death by his parents William Oscar and Reba
Hisaw Bain; brother Joe Dee Bain; as well as his grandparents
and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He leaves behind a loving family that includes his wife of 63
years, Shirley of the home; sons: Bill Bain of Antlers, Oklahoma
and Keith Bain of Valliant, Oklahoma; daughters: Anita and
husband Tom Cothran of McKinney, Texas and Trisha Bain and Les
Fry of Antlers, Oklahoma; two sister-in-laws: Anna Myrle Elliot
of Tahlequah, Oklahoma and Norma Bain of Ennis, Texas;
grandchildren Lee Bradley Cothran, Casey Bain, Kelli Cothran,
Will Bain, Emily Bain, and Lonnie Bain as well as nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will include Lee Bradley Cothran, Casey Bain, B.J.
Willis, James Ray Griffith, Ronny Day, Wayne Elliott, Scott
Shaw, and Robert Elliott.
Family night will be Sunday August 14, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. at
Burkhart Funeral Service of Antlers.
Services will be held Monday, August 15, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at
the First Baptist Church of Antlers with Reverend Aaron Reed and
Reverend Sam Dyer officiating.
Interment will follow at the
Valliant Cemetery, with services under the direction of Burkhart
Funeral Service of Antlers.
The family would like to say a special thanks to Melody
Whiteside, Christy Anderson and Aspire Hospice staff for their
loving care of Ruel at the time of his death and also to others
that attended to him in the past six years.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Baptist
Church kitchen benevolence fund or children's ministry fund.
