Mardell Nelson age 97 of Goldsby, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Purcell Municipal Hospital.
She was born on November 19, 1917 in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. She was the oldest of two children born to Bert David Hendrix and Queena Victoria (Madden) Hendrix. At the age of five, Mardell moved to McClain Co. Oklahoma from Arkansas with her mother and brother. She grew up in the Goldsby area and attended the Goldsby Country School. As a young girl Mardell learned how to work hard by working in the cotton and broomcorn fields and she kept that same work ethic throughout her life. On August 7, 1934, Mardell married the love of her life, a young man by the name of James Oliver Nelson. Together they had 10 children and lived in the Goldsby community. Mardell was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker. She worked hard to help provide for her family in the home and also working outside of the home. For many years she worked in the food service department at the University of Oklahoma where she later retired. Throughout her life she enjoyed being in the outdoors, gardening and working in the yard. She was a wonderful cook and was a fabulous seamstress and quilter. She was an avid O.U. sports fan, especially football and basketball.
She was preceded in death by: Parents, Bert and Queeny Hendrix; Husband, Oliver Nelson in 1979; Three infant children, Two sons, Henry and Lem Nelson; Brother, Daniel Hendrix;
She is survived by: four sons, James Nelson of Goldsby, Vernon Nelson of Golsdby, Bobby Nelson of Purcell, Gary Nelson of Goldsby; One daughter, Linda Holsey and husband Bobby of Goldsby; 23 grandchildren and nearly 100 great and great-great grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews. Also many other loving relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Goldsby
Baptist Church in Goldsby, OK. Interment will be at the Washington Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
