Joe Darold Robertson age 90, of Newcastle, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.
Darold was born July 26, 1926 in Burkburnett, Texas. He was the 3rd child of six children born to Joe Franklin Robertson and Barbara Zerita (Patterson) Robertson. Darold grew up a farm boy living in Pocasset, OK. As a young boy he learned how to work hard by working in the cotton fields. He attended Pocasset schools and graduated with the class of 1943. While growing up, he raised chickens and was known around the Pocasset and Chickasha area as “Chicken Robertson”. He also broke and rode horses, they were his lifelong passion. Two years after high school, Darold enlisted into the U. S. Army and proudly served his country for two years during WWII. During the war, he was a pitcher on the Army fast pitch softball team. On July 9, 1948, in Dennison, Texas, Darold married Rena Geneva Capps, and together they had five children. His family first lived in Hennessey, later Chickasha, Pocasset and Oklahoma City; then in 1965 they moved to Newcastle. Darold started breeding, training and racing Greyhounds in 1961. This led him to his life long career of 60 years as a professional Greyhound owner, breeder, and trainer. For over 50 years he operated the Robertson Kennel in Newcastle. Over the years he traveled to and raced in Florida, Iowa, Massachusset, Colorado and South Dakota. Because of his accomplishments, he was inducted into the Greyhound Hall of Fame. Darold was an avid quail hunter; he also enjoyed gardening, raising cattle, horses and chickens. While living in Newcastle, he was a member of the Newcastle First Baptist Church. He served on the Newcastle School Board and was instrumental in the building of the Newcastle Fair Barn. Then at the young age of 85 he started the farmers market in Newcastle. Where he not only sold produce but he also grew his own commodities. He will be remembered as a hard working husband who loved his family and they loved him.

He is survived by: Wife: Rena Robertson of the home Two sons: Kenney Robertson of Newcastle Lonnie Robertson and wife Debby of Newcastle Two daughters: Pam Adams and husband Ray of Blanchard Carol Craven and husband Frank of Reydon One brother: Walter Robertson and wife Caroll of Pennsylvania Two sisters: Betty Langston and husband Jack of OKC Patsy Burleson and husband Stanley of OKC Grandchildren: Zereta and John Sucharski, Jerrod and Mendy Lingle, Samantha and Bryan Brown, Kevin and Kaelie Robertson, Joe Don and Jennifer Robertson, Heather and Beau Hague, Stephen and Cody Beall. Great Grandchildren: Chloe and Trinity Sucharski, Braelyn, Jaden and Jake Lingle Jackson and Jake Robertson, Madeline, Hank and Hampton Hague; Many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Monday, April 10, 2017 at the Newcastle First Baptist Church. Interment will be at the Newcastle Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Newcastle.
