Norman Glen Payne age 86, of Wayne, Oklahoma passed away Friday, April 26, 2019, surrounded by his family.
Norman was born January 8, 1933, in the Hopping community east of Wayne. He was the 10th of eleven children born to Hayden Benjamin Payne and Maggie Pearl (Bacon) Payne. Norman was raised on the family farm west of Wayne where he and his family worked hard raising crops and animals. He attended Wayne schools and loved playing basketball and showing animals in FFA. Norman graduated from Wayne High School with the class of 1952. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953 and proudly served his country during the Korean conflict. During his military service, he was stationed at Camp Roberts, CA, Ft. Lewis, WA, Fairbanks, AK, and was honorably discharged in 1955. Upon his return from the service, he was employed by Safeway/Homeland stores in Oklahoma City and was soon promoted to Market Manager, a job he held for 40 years. On June 17, 1955, Norman married his best friend and true love, Rose Sharp. They lived in Oklahoma City and raised two daughters, Julie and Marta, until moving the family to Wayne in 1972. Norman continued working in OKC and Norman while farming and raising cattle in Wayne. He retired from Homeland in 1995 and continued working on the farm and raising cattle until his passing.
Throughout his life, Norman enjoyed being in the outdoors. He loved fishing and camping at lakes across OK, AR, TN and CO. In his later years, he and Rose enjoyed RV traveling. Most of all, Norman loved spending time with his family and always kept them in stitches. He was funny, genuine, kind and had a gentle, calming spirit. Norman was saved and baptized in Oklahoma City and had been a member of Wayne First Baptist Church for many years. He was a devoted Christian and leaned on his faith throughout his life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by:
Parents, HB and Pearl Payne,
Four brothers, Odell, Kelsie, Carl and Doyle Payne,
Two sisters, Hazel Birmingham and Helen Southard,
Three infant siblings,Ellen, Calvin and Pauline
Two nieces, Bobbette Borchardt and Vicki Williamson,
One nephew, Ron Payne,
Father and Mother in-law, Gordon and Norene Sharp.
Son-in-law, Mark Patterson.
He is survived by:
Wife of 63 years, Rose Payne of the home in Wayne,
Two daughters, Julie Cheatwood and husband Paul of Purcell,
Marta Patterson of OKC.
One sister, Murlie Jean Clark of Dallas,
One grandson, Zachary Cheatwood of Purcell.
Also many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be 10:00 Tuesday, April 30, 2019, at Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Purcell. Officiating will be Rev. Rick McGee. Arrangements are by Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
