Violet L. Matthews age 85 of Purcell, passed away Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Norman Regional Hospital. She was born February 16, 1928 in Ada, Oklahoma. Violet was the youngest of seven children born to Luther Cary and Mamie (Wells) Cary. She grew up in Ada and in the Noble areas. On August 2, 1947, at the age of 19, she married A. J. Matthews. They lived in Purcell most of their married life raising eight children; two sons and six daughters. Violet worked tirelessly in the home as a homemaker and outside the home as a cook. For seventeen years she worked as a cook at the State Hospital in Norman then at the Chickasaw Hills restaurant in Purcell. One of her last jobs before retiring was working at the Country Cove in Lexington. Violet was a godly Christian woman and attended the Light Worship Center in Purcell for many years. For the past three years she has attended the Lexington Church of Christ with her daughter. Throughout her life, she enjoyed cooking for her family, gardening and canning. She will be remembered as a fabulous cook and seamstress, also as a wonderful mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by: Parents: Luther and Mamie Cary, Husband of 53 years: A. J. Matthews on May 4, 2000, Three children: Phillip Matthews, Ricky Lynn Matthews and Andrea Sanders, One grandson: Donnie Sanders, Son-in-law: Ted Burton, Two brothers: Clyde and Ellis “Bud” Cary, Two sisters: Esther Womack and Rose Finley,

She is survived by: Five daughters: Susan Conkling and husband Bill of Bristow, OK. Mamie Vinson and husband Gloyd of Lexington, Terry Hall and husband Bobby of Lexington, Phyllid Davis and husband Jerry of Atkins, Arkansas, Carolyn Bryant and husband Mark of Purcell, 13 grandchildren: Alan, John and Chuck Conkling, Mistie Roberts, Eddie Burton, Dereck Burton, Amy Yount, Ritchie Garcia, Rachel Davis, Travis Bryant, Amanda Dempsey, Jeffery Hall and Mindy George. Many great grandchildren, And numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel in Purcell. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Purcell.
