Elberta “Bert” Jo Mathis age 87 of Purcell, passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2016 in Shawnee, OK.
She was an only child born to Joe Elbert Mathis and Jo (Clutz) Mathis. Bert grew up in Purcell and graduated from Purcell High School with the class of 1947. After high school she attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated with a degree in business in 1951. Bert never married nor had children of her own, however she was close to her cousins throughout her life. Bert worked for many years at the McCurdy Hospital Clinic in Purcell as a Secretary and Office Clerk. When her mother got up in years, Bert became her full time care giver. She also became her aunt Mary Smith care giver in her ageing years. Bert was a faithful Christian and longtime member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Purcell. For many years, she was proud to be part of the Rotary Cooks at the church. She was also a member of OHCE. Throughout her life, Bert enjoyed being active in a Bowling League with other Purcell women. She was an avid O.U. Football fan, an O. U. Women’s Basketball fan and a Los Angeles Dodge’s fan. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by: Parents, Elbert and Jo Mathis;
She is survived by: One 1st cousin, Catherine Brownell of Shawnee, Four 2nd cousins, Regina Foster of Pompano Beach, FL, Royia Bell of Lake Charles, LA, Jimmie Brownell of Shawnee, Meg Brownell of Shawnee; And a host of Purcell community and church friends.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel in Purcell. Interment will be at the Hillside Cemetery in Purcell. Send online condolences @wilsonlittle.com
