Mary Elizabeth Garrett, age 87 of Wayne, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, August 05, 2014. Mary was born January 16, 1927 in the Stealey Community near Wayne. She was the 4th of six daughters born to James Opal Nitzel and Gertrude Margaret (Foster) Nitzel. Mary grew up a farm girl and attended the Stealey School and later Wayne Schools where she graduated with the class of 1946. On April 23, 1949, she married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Joe Garrett. Together they farmed in the Stealey community and lived within one mile from where she grew up. Mary and Tom raised two daughters, Bonita and Diana. She worked all of her life as a homemaker and as a farmer’s wife. She was a wonderful seamstress and while her children were growing up she made all of their clothes. For 63 years she has been a member of the Stealey H.C.E Club and has held perfect attendance for 63 years. Mary was a faithful Christian and a charter member of the Unity Missionary Baptist Church of Wayne, established in 1951. Throughout her life, Mary enjoyed gardening, canning and cooking. Over the years she won numerous ribbons at the McClain Co. Fair for her cooking, sewing and crafts. She also enjoyed growing flowers and feeding her hummingbirds. She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by: Parents, James and Gertrude Nitzel; Four sisters, Katherine Driskill, Irma Lee Ferguson, Virgie Lampkin and Jimmie Ruth Logan;
She is survived by: Husband, Tom Garrett of the home; Two daughters, Bonita Brakefield and husband Steve of Wayne, Diana Brooks and husband Mack of Blanchard; One sister, Dean Pannell of Lexington; Six grandchildren, Cindy Stone and husband Rick of Blanchard, Sherry Brakefield of Maysville, Darla Larza and husband Johnny of Blanchard, Tommy Brakefield and wife Libby of Purcell, James Brakefield and wife Devin of Wayne, Cody Brooks and fiancé Amanda Smith of Blanchard. 12 gt grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and a host of friends.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Friday, August 8, 2014, at the Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel in Purcell. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Unity Missionary Baptist Church Van Fund. Burial will follow at the Hillside Cemetery in Purcell.
