Sherel Anthony Bruehl, age 78 of Purcell passed away peacefully on July 1, 2016 at home in Purcell.
Sherel was born September 28, 1937 in Norman, Oklahoma. He was the fourth of eight brothers and sisters born to Albert Charles Bruehl and Ima Estelle (Clark) Bruehl. Sherel grew up with his brothers and sisters on a small farm located on the east side of Norman. He attended school at Adair Country School grades 1st thru 7th and St. Josephs Catholic School grades 8th thru 12th in Norman, Oklahoma, graduating in 1956. After high school he served in the U. S. Army for two years. He married the mother of his children, Judith Gail Conley in 1957. Together they raised 5 children making their home in Purcell. Sherel worked throughout his whole life in the oil and gas business. In 1972 he bought out the “Old Jack’s” Oil Company on Green Avenue in Purcell which included an APCO service station and wholesale fuel to farmers. This eventually led to the start of his own company, Purcell Apco Oil Company. His life in Purcell led to many lifelong friendships. Sherel was a well loved and respected man by all who knew him. He became a member of the board of directors for Mid-America Vo-Tech from 1973-1975. He was also a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church and The Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed spending as much time as he could outdoors and especially loved mowing. For several years he served his church as a member of the Knights of Columbus by working as the church’s grounds keeper along with helping with church maintenance and upkeep. He loved Martin bird houses always having several that he lovingly cared for. He enjoyed golf throughout his life and was a youth golf promoter with the Brent Bruehl Memorial golf course. He sponsored the golfing range balls for this course for many years. Sherel was an Oklahoma football fan throughout his life and later became an avid OKC Thunder fan. He was a wonderful Father and Papa to all his children and grandchildren. He was blessed to have a large supporting and loving family as his health began to fail during the last years of his life. He lived with and was cared for by his sons and their families during his last couple of years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Ima Bruehl; sister, Anita Langdon; brother, Don Bruehl and oldest son, Brent Anthony Bruehl.
He is survived by four children, son, Bobby Bruehl and wife Terri, daughter, Brenda Deger and husband Tom, daughter, Cari Wilson and husband Kevin, and son, Neil Bruehl and wife Deborah all of Purcell. Five siblings all of Norman; brother, James Bruehl, brother, Harold Bruehl and his wife Ruth, sister, Emmalou Spor and husband Leroy, sister, Carolyn Daniels and husband Dale and sister Charlene Heitz and husband Glen, Sherel also has 8 grandchildren, Ryan Bruehl and wife Leah, Kelli Anderson and husband Clay, Lauren Deger, Nicholas Martin and wife Alex, Candice Bruehl, Kenneth Bruehl, Nathan Bruehl and Zoe Bruehl. He has 9 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and many other loving relatives. He is also survived by his companion for over 20 years, Tanya Herell of Purcell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00am Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Purcell. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Purcell. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus, P.O. Box 626, Purcell, OK 73080 or to the Brent Bruehl Memorial Golf Course, Purcell, OK.
