Roy Peters Sr.

Roy Peters, Sr., 87, died Monday, July 20, 1998, in Norman. He was born October 17, 1910 in McClain County, Oklahoma, six miles east of Lindsay, to one of the First Families of the Twin Territories, Grover Cleveland Peters, Sr. and Mary Alice Mowdy Peters.

When Roy was eight years old, the family moved to their farm four miles south of Dibble. He attended the two teacher school of Oak Hurst through the eighth grade. Roy started to Dibble High School in 1926-1927 at which time the school was accredited for ninth grade. In 1927-28, the school was accredited for sophomore year, and in 1928-29, for the junior year. In 1929-1930, Roy was one of six graduates of the school. Since there was no transportation at that time, he rode a horse the four miles to school and also participated in basketball and baseball.

He attended East Central State College in Ada, OK, for two years where he received a Two Year Certificate and returned his home school for four years to teach high school mathematics and to be an elementary principal. He had a Bachelor's Degree from East Central and a Master's Degree from the University of Oklahoma.

On September 12, 1936, he and Christine Harrell, also a Dibble teacher, were married in Lindsay, OK. In 1937, they moved to Seminole county where he taught mathematics and science and was principal of Central High School for two years. From 1939 to 1947, Roy was superintendent at Middleberg School in Grady County. From 1947 to 1961, he was superintendent at Alex Public Schools. He was appointed Grady County Superintendent and served in that capacity from 1961-1966 when he was hired as superintendent of Tuttle Public Schools. Upon retirement in 1976, he had finished forty-three years as an educator in Oklahoma schools. He considered himself blessed to have the continuing love, loyalty and friendship of former students, teachers and Grady County school superintendents. His aim as an educator was to see his students become responsible citizens in their respective communities. He was pleased to live to see that some of them believed in public education enough to share their time, effort and talents as members of Oklahoma school boards and that many of them, including his three children, are working in the field of education. He was often heard to say that he would not want to change his life's work if he could.

For six years following retirement, Roy sold real estate in the Tuttle community. When his health was beginning to fail five years ago, he and his wife moved to Oklahoma City to be near their two daughters and their husbands.

He was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and the First United Methodist Church of Moore, a long-time member of Lions Club, a 32nd degree and fifty-year member of the Masonic Lodge. Alex Community honored him June 27, 1998, by naming the school auditorium, "Roy Peters Auditorium."

He was predeceased by his parents and one nephew.

He is survived by his wife, Christine of sixty-one years; two daughters, Marilyn and husband, Richard Ehlers, Jeanie (Carolyn) and husband, Ken Sisson, all of Oklahoma City; and one son, Dr. Roy Peters, Jr. and wife, Barbara of Stillwater. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Kristy Ehlers of Moore, Todd Ehlers and wife, Heather of Guthrie, Dr. Beth (Sisson) and husband, Mike Goldman of Plano, TX, Blane Peters and wife, Dr. Joni Peters of Stillwater, and Jill Peters of Tulsa; one great granddaughter, Rachel Goldman of Plano, TX; two sisters, Mrs. Iliene Duncan of Purcell, Mrs. Madeline Mayfield of Oklahoma City; his brother, Grover C. Peters, Jr. of Killeen, TX; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be at 10 A.M. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 201 W. Main in Moore, with interment at Greenhill Cemetery in Lindsay under the direction of John M. Ireland Funeral Home and Chapel, 120 South Broadway in Moore. Graveside services will be at Greenhill Cemetery, a mile north of Lindsay, at 12:00 noon Thursday, July 23, 1998.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Moore, Tuttle United Methodist Church of Tuttle, OK or the church of your choice.
