Velter Dane Putman Obit

December 30, 1937 - January 05, 2023

Submitted by: Jo Aguirre

Velter “Dane” Putman, 85, passed away in his home, surrounded by family on January 5, 2023. The son of William Aubrey and Elsie Marie Putman, Dane was born on December 30, 1937, in Slaton, Texas.

Dane married, Dorothy F. Findley, the love of his life, in 1958 at the Baptist Church in Goldsby, Oklahoma. They were happily married for the next almost 65 years. Dane worked for Tyler and Simpson Company in Norman as a receiving clerk for 34 years before retiring. He also owned and operated Dane’s Bargain Store. But Dane’s work ethic didn’t allow retirement to stop him from working. After retirement, he continued to work, as a custodian at the University of Oklahoma and at Goldsby Gaming Center. He was a Walmart Greeter and did lawnmower repair service. Dane didn’t have an idle bone in his body.

In his spare time, Dane enjoyed bowling and playing (until he was 65 years old) and coaching softball. He coached little league as well as his church softball team. Dane loved woodworking, making all kinds of things at home, doing yardwork, and (fixing) things, whether they really needed it or not. He and Dorothy were long time members of Westwood Baptist Church in Norman. He led music at the church and was also a member of the all-gospel music group called the Gospel Traveler’s Band. Dane was known as Papa to everyone, not only his grandchildren, but to almost anyone who met him.

Dane is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John Dee Putman and William Putman; and one sister, Carrie Woffard.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Findley Putman; children, Dana Washburn and husband Bobby, Kenny Putman and wife Debbie Putman, Kelly Ireland, and Elcide Davis, Jr.; grandchildren, Nick Hailey and wife Lacey, Anthony Hailey and wife Jennifer, Fronnie Adkins and husband Randall, Kayla Southern and husband Brandon, Christina Hailey Dischinger, and Latonya Davis Erebholo; great grandchildren, Brody Hailey, Hunter Hailey, Orin Adkins, Landon Hailey, Grayson Hailey and one on the way, Kenzie Grace; brothers, Raymond Putman of Florida, Bill Putman and wife Suzan of Shawnee, and Jerry Putman and wife Karen of Shawnee; and many more loving family members and friends.

Funeral Services for Dane will be at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at the Eisenhour Funeral Home Chapel, Blanchard, Oklahoma. Interment to follow in the Blanchard Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Eisenhour Funeral Home. Online obituary and Guestbook are available at www.eisenhourfh.com.
