Virginia was born in 1921 to Robert Winfred Potter and Rosa Potter. She graduated from Bridgecreek High School and attended the University of Oklahoma for three and one half years. Her dream was to be Music Teacher, but she had to withdraw from the University lacking only one semester because of her Mother's hardship with taking care of the farm.
Virginia and her husband Reginald Petty purchased a grocery store and filling station in Bridgecreek in 1944, and lived in the back of the grocery store selling groceries and gas in the front. They raised two sons, Reginald "Jerry" and Danny Duane Petty. Virginia tended the grocery store while Reginald worked in Oklahoma City. Locals traded cream and eggs in exchange for groceries. In 1956 they purchased the Smith Family Grocery Store in Newcastle. They sold everything from sewing supplies, Men's clothing, socks, groceries, fresh meat, produce, block ice, and feed. Virginia joined the First Baptist Church of Newcastle in 1957. Because of Reginald's health, in 1969, they sold half of grocery store to their son and his wife, Jerry and Mary Petty. Virginia continued to operate the grocery store with them until 1981.
Virginia married Joe Elem Carrel on May 4, 1979. Joe and Virginia traveled extensively until 1995, and enjoyed their traveling time tremendously. Virginia loved to crochet and has entered many prize winning afghans at the State Fair of Oklahoma. She enjoyed visiting and crocheting with her friends. Her hobbies were crocheting, cooking and cleaning. Virginia was a very proud and moral lady. Both the Carrels and the Pettys have enjoyed a close family relationship for years.
Virginia is survived by her husband, Joe Carrel, her children Jerry Petty and wife Mary of Newcastle; Kevin Carrel and wife Tirzah of Moore; Donya McBride and husband Gary of Blanchard; Daniel Carrel and wife Hop of Oklahoma City; Dottie Boedeker of San Antonio, TX; eleven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
Virginia was preceded in death by one son Danny Duane Petty and her husband of 32 years, Reginald Petty.
Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at the First Baptist Church in Newcastle. Reverend Brent Parsons officiated with interment held in the Blanchard Cemetery. Arrangements made by Eisenhour Funeral Home, Blanchard.
