Dewey Alton Garrison
July 3, 1940 - February 13, 2020
Dewey Alton Garrison was born July 3, 1940 in Blanchard, Oklahoma to Lawrence Alton and Ruby Viola (Faught) Garrison. He departed this life on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at his home at the age of 79 years, 7 months, and 10 days.
Dewey's parents moved around a lot when he was growing up resulting in his attending 21 different schools through the 10th grade. He did obtain his GED and completed courses studying Psychology at Tulsa Junior College. In July, 1957, Dewey enlisted in the US Navy where he worked as a pipefitter. He served his country proudly and was discharged in June, 1961. On October 12, 1963, in Quinton, Oklahoma, Dewey Alton Garrison and Patricia Marie Pearson were united in marriage. To this union was born 3 children, Dennis, Mindy, and Amanda. The couple had been married for over 56 years.
Dewey lived in Tulsa sometime before he and his family moved to Oologah where he attended Zion Hill Free Will Baptist Church. The family then moved to Locust Grove in 1987. He worked for some time as a welder at Flint Steel. The day before Labor Day in 1967, Dewey began a job that became a passion in his life, that of being a fireman. He was employed by the Tulsa Fire Department for over 21 years when he retired in 1988 as a Captain for Station #8. While working as a fireman, he also worked for Do-All Sawing Products as a welder making saw blades.
After retirement, Dewey cut tons of wood and continued to raise game chickens, something he had done since he was a little boy. He was known far and wide for his game chickens and truly enjoyed the time spent raising them. He also was known for raising good vegetables, especially watermelons. Dewey treasured the time he spent with his family showing milking shorthorn dairy cattle. He was always willing to help anyone in need and loved to visit with his friends at the coffee shop. He was tremendously proud to have been a Tulsa Firefighter and would have continued that job if able. Above all, Dewey loved his wife, children, and grandchildren. He will be missed by those that loved him.
