Evelyn Curtis
July 27, 1939 - January 16, 2025
Evelyn Curtis was born on July 27, 1939, in Tulsa, OK, to Walter & Storabell Lee (Kendrick) Gillum. She departed this life on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at her home in Locust Grove, surrounded by her loving family.
Evelyn attended Springdale School in Tulsa, OK, during her childhood. On June 6, 1959, she married James Buford Curtis in Coweta, OK. They shared over 51 years of marriage, living in Tulsa & later in Catoosa & California, before settling in Locust Grove in 1973. Evelyn resided in their home there for the past 51 years.
Throughout her life, Evelyn worked as a cook at the Village Inn & Sunrise Bakery in Locust Grove, as well as at the Country Cottage. She & Buford also owned & operated the Citgo Gas Station in Locust Grove. Evelyn was a longtime member of the Iron Post Free Holiness Church. Her unwavering faith and devotion to God were central to her life. She loved attending church & cherished her church family, living as a woman of God with a deeply spiritual heart.
One of Evelyn's greatest passions was fishing. Known at the local fishing dock as the best crappie catcher ever, she spent countless joyful hours by the water. She also loved cooking & was well-known for her delicious dishes, including dressing, divinity, banana pudding, & coconut cream pie. Holidays were especially dear to her as she welcomed family into her home to celebrate. Evelyn treasured her family, particularly her grandchildren, & found immense joy in their company. A loving & caring wife, mother, grandmother, & friend, she was dedicated to her family & faith. Her presence will be greatly missed by all who knew & loved her.
Evelyn is survived by: her five children: Kathy Wendt & husband Bill of Pryor, OK, Loretta Curtis of Locust Grove, OK, James Curtis & wife Dawnya of Locust Grove, OK, Tina Anderson & husband Tracy of Claremore, OK, Mark Curtis & wife Shelly of Red Oak, OK; She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren: Ronnie Laughlin, Kevin Laughlin, Elizabeth Payne, Charlie January, Phillip January, Eva McClain, James Curtis II, Amber Curtis, Donnie Curtis, Whitney Campbell, Cearra Curtis, Amber, Aaron, and Michael; Numerous great-grandchildren & great-great-grandchildren; one brother: Dexter Gillum & wife Marilyn of Tahlequah, OK; & one sister: Brenda Davis of California.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: James Buford Curtis; two brothers: Ernest Gillum & Darrell Gillum; one sister: Beverly Hays; two granddaughters: Sara Beth Henington & Allison Jewel Henington; & one grandson: Jeremy Scott Curtis.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at the Iron Post Free Holiness Church in Locust Grove. Reverend Kevin Webster & Reverend Travis Martin will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hogan Cemetery in Locust Grove. Services have been entrusted to Locust Grove Funeral Home.
