January 4, 1925 - June 19, 2014
Funeral services for Lee R. Flanders, 89 of Chouteau, will be held on Monday, June 23, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Key Funeral Home in Pryor. Rev. Barry Chupp will officiate with burial following at Chouteau North Cemetery and military honors provided by the American Legion Miami, Post 147. Visitation will be held on Sunday afternoon from 2-4 PM. Lee passed away on Thursday morning in Chouteau. Services are under the direction of Key Funeral Home in Pryor.
Lee Roy Flanders was born on January 4, 1925 in Muskogee to Bob and Flossy Bell (Randolph) Flanders. He passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2014 in Chouteau at the age of 89. Lee was one of 6 children and grew up and attended school in Teresita, OK. He joined the United States Navy in December of 1943, serving in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS MacDonough, a Destroyer, as a gunner mate 3rd class. He was honorably discharged in December 1945 and returned back to the states. He lived in California for some time, working as a logger in the booming lumber industry then later returned to Oklahoma where he remained. Lee married Mary Louise McCarty on August 22, 1950 in Tahlequah. They made their home in the Tahlequah area and Wichita, KS for a brief time, and then in 1952 they moved to Chouteau and had one daughter, Catherine. Lee went to work for Rockwell/McDonnell Douglas where he worked as an aircraft mechanic for 27 years; retiring on January 1, 1990. After retiring, Lee loved spending time outdoors; he was an avid deer hunter and was passionate about this hobby and enjoyed hunting with his nephews and great nephews. He also enjoyed woodworking and working a small farm in Cherokee County that he and Mary owned.
He is survived by his wife Mary of the home, one daughter Catherine Porterfield and husband Harold of Claremore and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
