Charles Standingwater
July 17, 1929 - February 16, 2024
Charles Standingwater was born July 17, 1929, in Locust Grove, Oklahoma, the son of Lillie Standingwater and Watson Hair. He departed this life on Friday, February 16, 2024, in Pryor, Oklahoma, at the age of 94 years, 6 months and 30 days.
Growing up, Charles attended Oaks Mission and Locust Grove schools. He married the love of his life, Darlene Pegion Condit, on September 23, 1950, in Ephrata, Washington. To this union was born 5 children, Bob, DeWayne, Susie, Mickey, and Dena. Charles and Darlene spent over 73 years together as a married couple.
Charles and his family moved to the La Jolla Indian Reservation in California in 1975. He was a dedicated husband and father that worked hard to provide for his family. Over the years, his jobs led him to build motor homes and aircraft. As well, he worked on highway construction and as a heavy equipment operator in California. He retired as a supervisor at the Pechanga Casino in Temecula, California in 1998 where he first started working in the kitchen.
After retirement in 1998, Charles and Darlene moved back to Locust Grove. Charles was a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner. He enjoyed his time being involved in these organizations. As well, Charles enjoyed fishing and traveling. As a person that was on the go constantly, he was hard to keep up with. He never hunted animals, but was known to kill a pheasant with his car, then make sure the meat did not go to waste.
Charles was of the Indian Baptist faith all of his life. He was a devoted Christian that loved to read his bible. Charles was proud of his Cherokee ancestry as he was a Cherokee First Language speaker. His family tree goes back to his great-great-great-great grandfather, Sequoyah. Charles was a resourceful person that found joy in helping and taking care of people. Above all, he loved his wife and family very much. All that knew and loved him will miss and remember him dearly.
Charles is survived by: His wife Darlene; 5 children: Bob Standingwater and wife Roberta of LaPorte, Texas, DeWayne Standingwater of Bellaire, Texas, Susie Johnson of Springville, California, Mickey Vernon of Riverside, California, and Dena Carol Standingwater-Hill and husband Willie of Pasadena, Texas; 17 grandchildren, at least 34 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchild; half-sister: Ruthie Jones of Inola, Oklahoma; he was preceded in death by: his parents; 8 half-brothers; and 1 half-sister.
