Vernon Phillips
May 13, 1958 - February 6, 2026
Vernon "VR" Phillips, lovingly known as Papa and Pop-Pop to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was born on May 13, 1958, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and passed away on Friday, February 6, 2026, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, at the age of 67.
Vernon grew up in the Locust Grove and Iron Post areas, raised in a large, loving family. He was lovingly raised by his maternal grandmother, Nannie Deerhead Sac, who played a significant role in shaping the man he became. As a boy, Vernon enjoyed playing with his brothers and spending time outdoors. He attended Locust Grove High School and remained a Locust Grove resident for most of his life.
On August 29, 1996, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, Vernon was united in marriage to Barbara, with whom he shared a devoted life centered around family. Together, they loved spending time with their grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Vernon was a devoted and loving husband and took exceptional care of Barbara during her illness, faithfully managing the household, cooking, cleaning, and tending to every detail with love and dedication.
Throughout his working years, Vernon attended Job Corp before being employed as a painter and also worked briefly as a surveyor. He was a man who appreciated honest work and a simple life.
Vernon had accepted Jesus Christ into his heart and lived his life guided by faith, family, and love for the outdoors. He was rarely happier than when he was fishing - often daily - spending time at the creek, swimming, camping, and enjoying the quiet beauty of nature. He was a proud OU Sooners fan and enjoyed college football passionately. Vernon took great pride in his home, especially his yard, which he kept meticulously mowed and cared for. His country home was his sanctuary.
He loved classic television shows such as The Andy Griffith Show, old westerns, Bonanza, and MASH*, and was an avid reader who enjoyed biographies, war stories, and rock-and-roll celebrity tales. Vernon especially loved Halloween and took great joy in decorating his yard for the holiday. Above all else, he cherished time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Vernon will be remembered for his quick wit, playful sarcasm, and unmistakable sense of humor. Affectionately referred to as a "crabby old man," he was a true jokester, and was well-known for throwing popcorn, making messes, flipping his ears, and saying, "Got your buck-in-ears right here." He was deeply proud of his family and leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
Vernon is survived by: His two step-children that he loved as his own: Joseph Yoder of Salina, Oklahoma, and Carrie Wood and husband James of San Angelo, Texas; 1 daughter-in-law: Kari Yoder of Pryor, Oklahoma; 8 grandchildren: Shaun Trout and wife Jessica of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Britni Yoder of San Angelo, Texas, Hattie Foreman and husband Zach of Pryor, Oklahoma, Chelsea Wood of San Angelo, Texas, Savannah Wood of San Angelo, Texas, Kyler Yoder of Pryor, Oklahoma, Hayden Yoder of Pryor, Oklahoma, and Alycia Waits and husband Rowdy of Claremore, Oklahoma; 13 great grandchildren and 2 more on the way; 2 Brothers: Wayne "Sonny" Phillips of Locust Grove, Oklahoma, and Brian Phillips of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 1 sister: Sandra Sac Parker of Locust Grove, Oklahoma.
