Leland Mark Eitzen was born on April 20, 1954 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana to Wesley & Lauretta (Martens) Eitzen. After a 6-year battle with ALS, he went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 27th, 2017.
At the age of 6, Lee accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior while attending a Good News Club. The family moved back to Fairview when Lee was 8. He graduated from Fairview High School in 1972 and went on to attend Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas from 1972-74, then NWOSU, graduating in 1978 with a degree in Elementary Education. For several years, he taught at Oklahoma Bible Academy, Longdale Schools and James Crabtree Correctional Center. He sold life insurance for Mutual Security Life, worked on several local construction projects, as well as for MaBar and Waldon. From 1994-2010, he worked at Crabtree for the Oklahoma Correctional Industries program. He then began working at the Department of Human Services office in Fairview until his retirement in 2013. While attending Tabor College, Lee met and fell in love with Naomi Ruth Vogt. Lee knew within just a few days that she was “the one”. But Naomi, being older and wiser, was making certain that this guy would “make the grade”, as she too, was an Elementary Ed. major. They were married on May 31, 1974 in Hillsboro, Kansas. Two daughters were born of this union, Jennifer Denise and Jessica Dawn.
Between work, home, and serving in his church in many capacities over the years, Lee was also actively engaged in teaching in the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation Hunter Education program for 20 years; Outstanding first year agent for Mutual Security Life in 1979; active in the Fairview Lions Club where he was editor of The Lions Roar for many years; a member of the “Chain Gang” at the Fairview High School football games for 25 years for which he received an Honorary Letterman status; OCI Employee of the Year 1997; Lion of the Year in 2014; and Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the year in 2014. Lee loved the outdoors. Fishing in a Gloss Mountain farm pond or fly fishing in a Colorado stream were great activities of refuge for him. Quail hunting, too, was a favorite, where he not only hunted locally, but also in Arizona and Oregon seeking various species of quail to hunt.
Lee was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi; his mother, Lauretta Eitzen; father-in-law & mother-in-law, Cornelius (Curt) & Esther Loewen Vogt. Survivors include both daughters, Jennifer Cabral & husband Billie of Benton, Kansas, and Jessica Eitzen of Woodward, OK; one grandson, Korbin Snesrud of Benton, Kansas; father, Wesley R. Eitzen of Fairview; one brother, Philip D. Eitzen and wife Tamara of Fairview; sister-in -law Shirley Adams & husband Gordon of Salem, Oregon; brother-in-law Ranney Vogt of Emporia, Kansas; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Burial will be held at the South Mennonite Brethren Cemetery on Friday, January 5th at 11 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 4 p.m. at the Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday, January 4th from 6-8 p.m. at the Pierce Funeral Home in Fairview.
