Funeral services for Larry D Stiles were held Wednesday morning September 7, 1960 in the Fairview Methodist Church with Rev. Hale Noble of Wakita Oklahoma officiating and the Rev. Leonard Cronin of Fairview Oklahoma officiating. Burial was held at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of Ingram Funeral Home of Fairview, Oklahoma.
Larry was the 17 year old son of Harold E and Stella Mae Harman Stiles of Wakita and was one of the State's four drowning victims over the Labor Day weekend. He was born in Fairview on February 22, 1943 and grew up in the Roscoe community. His family moved to Cherokee Oklahoma in 1952 and to Wakita in 1959. He drowned about 11:15 am September 5, 1960 at the Great Salt Plains Lake.
Survivors in addition to his parents include one brother Harold E Stiles Jr. of Wichita Kansas; five sisters: Mrs. Volney (Verla) Woodruff, Mrs. William (Phyllis) Neice, Mrs. Lois Joplin, Miss Dorothy Stiles all of Wichita, and Mrs. J. H. Howerton of Hamilton Texas. He was preceded in death by a sister Hazel Arlene Stiles Kirkpatrick on October 10, 1951.

Salt Plains Swim Fatal to Boy, 17
A 17 – year – old Wakita youth lost a race and drowned Monday at Great Salt Plains Lake to become the first Labor Day fatality for Northwest Oklahoma and the fourth drowning victim for the state over the weekend. Larry Stiles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Stiles, drowned about 11:15 AM Monday morning just off Sandy Beach on the north side of the lake.
Witnesses reported Stiles had challenged his sister – in – law from Wichita, to a race out to the barrels marking off the swimming area. Unable to swim to the barrels, Stiles shouted for help, his sister – in – law was unable to help him and he went under. Her name was not reported.
Alfalfa County Deputy Sheriff Hoot Gibson said his office received a call for help at 11:25 AM and the body was recovered about 11:40 AM.
Roy Benson, Wichita, Kansas, and Cheryle Moxley, 901 W. Illinois, who were in the area in a boat, were credited with recovering the body.
Cheryle Moxley applied artificial respiration by the mouth-to-mouth method, but with no response. The youth was pronounced dead by Doctor Robert D. Shultee, Enid, who arrived on the scene.
Deputy Sheriff Gibson rushed to the drowning scene with Undersheriff George Smith and Ed Ackerman of Cherokee, who was described as a good swimmer.
The victim was born in Fairview and grew up in the Roscoe community. His family moved to Cherokee 1962 and to Wakita last year, where he was a high school senior.
Funeral services will be announced by Ingram Funeral Home, Fairview.

Other weekend drowning victims, all of whom died Sunday, were Robert Peden, 19, Oklahoma City; Bobbie Vincent Sheppard, 26, Stillwater, and his brother, Horace Sheppard, 21, Stillwater.
A three – year – old girl, Debra Ann Dugan, narrowly escaped drowning at Lake altus, Sunday. The child, daughter of Mrs. Lewis Dugan of Davidson, Oklahoma, was pulled unconscious from the water. Dean Burch, Elk City, applied artificial respiration and revived her.

Former Fairview Boy Drowns Monday
A former Fairview boy was one of the state's four drowning victims over the Labor Day weekend.
Larry Stiles, 17 – year – old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Stiles, Wakita, drowned about 11:15 AM Monday morning at the Great Salt Plains Lake.
According to information received here, young Stiles had challenged his sister – in – law from Wichita to a race out to the barrels marking off the swimming area on the north shore. Unable to make it to the barrels, Stiles shouted for help, but his sister – in – law was unable to aid him, and he went under.
A Wichita man and an Enid resident were in the area in a boat and recovered the body about 11:40 AM.
Artificial respiration was applied but young Stiles was pronounced dead by an Enid Doctor, who arrived on the scene.

Pallbearers were Stacey Barwick, Larry Reed, Tom Hornint, Monte Smith, Ronnie Green and James Stout.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Albert Jester, Mrs. Eugene Nichelson and Mrs. Arthur Bower.
