The funeral service for Winters “Red” Cochran, age 89, of Enid, will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 20, 2016, at Anderson-Burris Funeral Home, with Dr. R. Joe Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Meno, with arrangements by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home.
Winters “Red” was born, the youngest of four children, to Adam Grant and Eva May (Bergdall) Cochran on December 29, 1926, near Sterling, Colorado. He went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 17, 2016.
Winters moved with his family to the Oklahoma area in 1934, graduating from Ames High School in 1945. After graduation, he received his B.C.S. degree from Enid Business College. Winters retired from G.E. Failing Company in 1986, after serving over 34 years, where his co-workers regarded him as a reliable and exceptional employee and friend. His hobbies included coaching youth baseball for the Enid Lions Club, participating in church softball, puzzles, family reunions, and fellowshipping with his many friends. Winters was a devout fan of the New York Yankees, of which he kept annual scrapbooks of his beloved team and spent many a summer’s night watching their games. But most of all, Winters was a kind and gentle man, eager to smile and laugh, and who loved his family and his friends.
Having accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at a young age, Winters regarded his church as a focal point in his life. As a young man, Winters was a member of the Concord Methodist Church and the Meno Christian Church. As an adult, he became actively involved in the Davis Park Christian Church until becoming a founding member of Oakwood Christian Church in 1978, serving in leadership roles, such as Chairman of the Board, Deacon, and Elder. Whatever the church needed, Winters was there ready to lend a helping hand and serve in any way that he could. As a testament to his devotion to his Savior and his church, Winters had 41 years of perfect attendance at Sunday School.
Winters was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Grant Cochran and David Cochran; sister Clara Mae Cottom; brother-in-law Floyd Cottom, and niece Martha Cottom. Survivors include his nephew Marvin Cottom and wife Betty, great-niece Cindy Borden, and great nephews, Darren Cottom and wife Polly, and Steve Cottom and wife Heather; numerous great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
Memorials may be made to Oakwood Christian Church.
