September 8, 1977 - May 14, 2021
Adam Walter Martens was born on September 8, 1977, in Enid, Oklahoma, to Trent and Sheri Martens, and started life on the farm in Fairview. He was active in the Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church, where he accepted Christ as his Savior at a young age, and was baptized by Rev. Ernie Friesen at the age of 10. He passed from this life on May 14, 2021, at the age of 43.
He attended Progressive School through sixth grade and then transferred to Fairview schools in seventh grade and graduated high school in 1996.
Adam attended Tabor College where he played basketball and baseball. After two years at Tabor, he transferred to Oklahoma State University and graduated in December 2000 with a BS in Public Relations and Broadcasting.
While at OSU, Adam proposed to his high school sweetheart, Nicole Hasty, and they were married on May 27, 2000. They started their life together by moving to Dallas, TX, where Nicole attended Dallas Theological Seminary and Adam worked at Maxim Healthcare.
In 2003, Adam and Nicole moved to Oklahoma City and welcomed their daughter, Sydney Anese Martens on March 10, 2004. Shortly after, Adam realized the life he envisioned for his growing family was back in Fairview, and in September 2004 they moved home. Adam and Nicole then welcomed their son, Reed Walter Martens on January 26, 2006.
Adam initially worked for the Fairview Fellowship Home but slowly started the transition to farming and ranching full time. As the years progressed, he devoted many hours and effort working alongside his father, Trent, to grow the family operation. Adam farmed wheat, but he most enjoyed ranching and managing the cattle operation.
In 2005, Adam decided to supplement his career in farming with a real estate license and worked through Wiggins Auctioneers.
Adam and Nicole were advocates for agriculture and worked to promote the ag industry through an active membership in Oklahoma Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers. Adam was also a member of the Sooner Cooperative board and Major County Conservation District board.
Adam remained an active member of the Fairview MB church where he was a Mennonite Brethren Youth (MBY) sponsor for ten years, taught adult Sunday School and served on various committees. Adam was also an active member of the Fairview community. He served on the Fairview Economic Development board, volunteered many hours auctioneering for school-related activities and events and was well known as the voice of the Fairview Yellowjackets where he announced football and basketball games.
Adam's true joys in life came in spending time with his family, coaching and cheering on Sydney and Reed in sports and encouraging them in FFA and other activities. Within the last year, Adam embraced a new hobby, hunting, that quickly turned into a bit of an obsession, but also led to hours of conversation with his brother-in-law, Chad, and time spent with Reed. He loved golfing with his friends, complaining about the lack of success of his OSU sport teams, and vacationing with his family and friends.
Adam is survived by his wife Nicole (Hasty) Martens, and children, Sydney and Reed of Fairview; parents Trent and Sheri Martens of Fairview; sister Andrea Nightingale (Chad) of Bartlesville; in-laws Bill and Cheryl Hasty of Fairview; brother-in-law Jason Hasty (Rebekah) of Oklahoma City; nieces and nephew Gillian Hasty, Hayden Hasty, Alayna Nightingale and Adalyn Nightingale.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Walter and Adina Martens, maternal grandparents, Orla and Betty Ratliff, and cousin Bryce Martens.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at the Fairview High School Gym, with Pastor Travis Schmidt officiating.
